The video, narrated by Rowdy Gaines and Ted Robinson, touches on some of the winners from the final night of racing in Charlotte and their shot at making the Olympic team later this summer for the United States. First they talk about 200 IM winners Caitlin Leverenz and Ryan Lochte, who both look poised to make the Olympic team in that event. They also touch on breaststroker Lilly King as she looks for her first Olympic team, and distance specialist Connor Jaeger as he looks for his second. King was victorious on Sunday in the 50 breast, while Jaeger won the 1500 free.
I’m guessing the big name to miss the team this year is Tyler Clary. I just think that some combination of these younger guys (Kalisz, Prenot, Licon, Murphy, Conger) are gonna be too good for him to beat in all of his events.
He’s a slow season swimmer, a great taper swimmer and a vicious fighter under pressure, so you can’t count him out yet, but you’re right, Dave, the gauntlet is bigger this year, and he’s older. A few months ago, I thought he would still be safe for the 2Back but now Pebley is consistently close behind Murphy for two meets in a row now, and those guys get to race each other every day. In fact, Clary is barely even ahead of Grevers at this point, and he’d still have to leapfrog Owen before he could even challenge Pebley. I’m wouldn’t say that Leverenz is poised in the 200 IM—-she’s great and I wish well but that event has really opened up Eastin, Di Rado et al.
