The preliminary session on day 1 is set to be an exciting start the 2014 US National Championships. This morning’s session will be short, with only the 200 butterflies and the 100 freestyle. The 4×100 freestyle relays are also on day 1, but all the relays will swim at night. For those trying to catch a glimpse of Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps in the 100 freestyle, the timeline predicts that event will begin at 10:20am.
The 200 butterfly will be an interesting event without Michael Phelps. Last year was the first time he wasn’t in this event, which allowed for a few fresh places to sneak onto the national team. Check out the US Nationals preview for the men’s 200 butterfly.Â
The women’s 200 butterfly is led by Camille Adams, but she has a big pack behind her that are capable of working their way onto the podium. Check out the women’s US Nationals preview for the women’s 200 butterfly.Â
The women’s 100 freestyle is sure to be exciting with familiar faces like Missy Franklin, Allison Schmitt, Shannon Vreeland, Megan Romano, Simone Manuel, Megan Romano, and Jessica Hardy, just to mention a few. Missy Franklin has the fastest seed time at 53.36. It will take a 53.78 to crack the top 10 in the world this year. Cate Campbell from Australia has the world fastest time at 52.68.
The men’s 100 freestyle will be tight. Jimmy Feigen and Nathan Adrian lead the field, but the top 28 swimmers are all under 50 seconds in this event, and it will come down to hundreths to make it into the final. We are hoping to see a 47 from Nathan Adrian, who is the favorite to win. Everyone is curious to see what Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps can do in this event. Prior to this year, both athletes have focused on and trained for much bigger programs. This is the first time both swimmers have focused on the sprint 100’s.

Scratches
There were no scratches from the seeded heats of the men’s and women’s 200 butterfly. The women’s 100 freestyle is also scratch free, even with Katie Ledecky being entered into every freestyle event this weekend. It is not likely she swims every freestyle event this week, but if there is anyone that can attempt it and get away with it, it is her.
There was only one scratch out of the seeded heats of the men’s 100 freestyle. Michael Klueh from Club Wolverine scratched from his 21st seed, bumping Paul Powers into the seeded heats.
What happened to Janet Hu
Was it just my imagination or did the NBAC swimmers look a little sluggish this morning? Schmitt didn’t make the A final, Luchsinger did, but barely, and Dwyer’s time was unimpressive. I was worried about Phelps after the 50, but he came back well for the finish! Whew!
I think it’s unfair to have Adrian swim next to Phelps. The two of them swim entirely different races. It makes Michael look slow! But great heats all around. Would’ve liked to see Dressel make A-final but nevertheless it was great to watch!
Nice stats… Men’s 100 free there were 31 swimmers under 50!
I think MP had the best second half in the entire Men 100 free heats 😀
Impressive display of dominance by Adrian and a very good race by A. Ervin.
Simone Manuel also went FAST!
