Australia’s Cate Campbell continues to look like the class of the field in the women’s sprints, following her Olympic 100 free record from heats with another Olympic record in the semifinals.

Campbell was 52.71 Wednesday night to shave a few hundredths off her 52.78 from the heats. She’s now 2-for-2 in Olympic records in her individual events so far, and has a shot to break not only the Olympic record but the world record in tomorrow’s final.

Campbell broke the 100 free world record at a domestic meet just last month and appears to be Australia’s best bet at an individual gold medal – the proud swimming nation has run dry on individual golds since Mack Horton‘s day 1 400 free victory.

She was pushed surprisingly hard in semis, with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak setting a new Junior World Record and finishing just .01 back of Campbell.

But the Australian has looked smoother than smooth so far, and should have plenty left in the tank for the final, especially considering her 51.8 and 51.9 splits on Australia’s 4×100 free relay early in the meet.
