The home of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships is scheduled to get a face lift, according to local news source, Glasgow Evening Times.
The Tollcross International Swimming Center in Glasgow, Scotland, is set to undergo a £3.75 million ($5.2 million) upgrade in advance of hosting 2018 European Championships. The proposed improvement plans still need city council approval, whose vote is expected to happen this week.
The list of items scheduled to be modernized includes lighting, a new boiler plant, water quality monitoring systems, as well as the swimming pool’s floating floor, all of which are nearing the end of their life expectancies.
The facility is no stranger to upgrades, as, in anticipation of the Commonwealth Games, a £14m ($19.5 million) extension to the building was completed in May 2013 after 19 months of construction. A 50 meter warm-up pool was included in that phase of improvement.
Glasgow Life chairman Archie Graham said, “Over the years Tollcross International Swimming Centre has been the scene of many memorable sporting moments, not least during the Commonwealth Games. It is also a hugely popular community leisure centre attracting thousands of people on a weekly basis who use the swimming pools and state-of-the-art Glasgow Club health and fitness facilities to train and keep fit.”
Graham continued, “This investment will safeguard the venue’s position as home to some of the world’s leading swimming events and as one of the top sports centres in the country.”
Have you been to Scotland Jake and assessed the sports centres?
Top sport centres in the country? Doesn’t mean much when that country is Scotland…
