As the senior ranks of Brazilian swimming undergo financial and organizational chaos, the junior ranks continue to develop talented swimmers, as was evidenced at last weekend’s Mauricio Bekenn Trophy in Porto Alegre.
The meet is the national championship event for 13-year olds and 14 year olds in Brazil, and saw several National Age Records go down.
The star of the show was Joao Campos from Fluminese. The 14-year old won the 200 free in a record-setting time of 1:53.05 and the 400 free in a record-setting time of 4:00.96.
For a point of comparison, his time in the 200 free is .25 seconds faster than the USA Swimming National Age Group Record in the event (1:53.30 – Dare Rose), and his 400 free time would rank 8th among American 13-14s all-time.
He negative-split that 400, clocking 2:00.93 on the front half and 2:00.03 on the back-half, saying afterward that he expected a little better time from the race.
Campos also won the 100 fly (53.19), 200 fly (2:07.88), and 50 free (24.68) at the meet.
13-year old Samuel Lopes also had a record-setting week. He won the men’s 100 backstroke in 59.99, which makes him the youngest Brazilian ever to break 1 minute in that event. He also got the meet record (but not national record) in the 200 back, swimming 2:12.18.
The 3rd individual record-breaker of the meet was 13-year old Beatriz Bezerra who swims for the club AABB Recife. She had a number of top 3 finishes throughout the meet, but her best swims came in the 100 fly. IN prelims, she broke the Meet Record with a 1:03.63, and then in finals she knocked almost another second off that record to also add the National Record in 1:02.71.
Her other win came in the 50 free, where she swam 26.90.

Great 200. So far have only found Thorpe ( 1.50 ), Richards from Great Britain ( 1.51 ) and Hauck from Australia (1.52) that were faster at 14 .
The 53.19 is for the 100 free, not the 100 fly. He went 58.16 in the 100 fly. Great times anyway, but 53 in 100 fly would have been crazy!
João was born on March 11th, so he won´t turn 15 so soon.. and he expected more on the 400 he said, he had a negative race (2:00:93 2:00:03)
Also on November Brazil had the Julio Delamare trophy (17-18 years old) with a new age groud record on 400 free, Murilo Sartori went 3:49:77 and also went 1:48:12 on 200.
His 400 was almost negative. 56.43, 1:54.97 (55.54), 2:53.10 (58.13), 3:49.77 (56.67), 1:54.97 + 1:54.80 so he was improvement room
The Championship for 15-16 years old will begin on December 12th, some Age Groups Records might fall also
