The Potomac Valley Short Course 14&U Championships is in the books, having wrapped up last month in College Park, Maryland. Rockville Montgomery Swim Club topped the team standings on the boy’s side of the meet, while Nation’s Capital Swim Club dominated for the girls.

14-year-old Andrew Vanas of Nation’s Capital had a terrific meet, collecting four 1st place finishes in the boys 13-14 age group. Highlighting his meet was his performance in the 50 freestyle, where he recorded a best time of 20.82. His swim moves him to 30th all-time for 13-14 boys, and is the 4th-fastest in the country this year for the age group.
Vanas also won the 200 IM (1:54.74), 100 fly (50.67), and 100 breast (59.20). His 200 IM was a best time by a second, while his 100 breaststroke marked a personal best by over three seconds. He set additional best times in the 200 back (1:55.08) and 100 back (52.06), but did not win.
13-year-old Sadie Buckley from the Mason Makos Swim Team also captured four event titles. She cracked the two-minute barrier to take runner-up in the 200 backstroke with a 1:59.26, which she improved to 1:58.23 a month later. Her victories included the 200 freestyle (1:53.68), 100 back (56.65), 200 IM (2:05.86), and 400 IM (4:28.96).
12-year-old Jeremiah Germosen from Rockville Montgomery won all five of his individual events, setting personal best times in all of them. Germosen hit a 56.97 in finals of the 100 IM, which makes him the 74th-fastest performer of all-time in the 11-12 age group. His other best time swims included the 100 fly (56.10), 100 breast (1:06.59), 200 free (1:54.14), and 50 free (23.23). He went on to NCSA’s less than a month later to improve on all four.
Rockville Montgomery’s Rafael Fontana also won five events in the boy’s 11-12 age group. He dropped over ten seconds in the 500 freestyle to win by nine seconds (5:07.08), as well as hit a best time in the 200 fly to top the field by over 13 seconds (2:05.25). He improved his 200 fly to 2:05.16 at NCSAs later in the month, ranking him 5th this year for 11-12 boys.
Sydney Campbell was the top performer for the girls’ 11-12 age group, tallying a total of four individual wins. She logged personal bests in five of her six races, highlighted by her three second drop in the 100 IM (1:01.33). Another highlight was the 50 fly, which she won in a best time of 25.91, moving her to 6th this season among 11-12 girls. Rounding out her victories was the 50 breaststroke (31.53) and 50 free (24.53).
Other Standout Swimmers:
- Griffin Oehler of Rockville Montgomery won the 100 and 200 backstroke for 13-14 boys, hitting personal best times of 51.08 and 1:52.60. His 100 ranks 13th this season, while his 200 puts him 24th.
- Colton Horner and Tyler Harris won four events each in the 10&U boys age group. Horner posted a 1:03.88 in the 100 backstroke to rank 5th this season, while Harris hit a 58.01 in the 100 freestyle to rank 18th.
- Kennedy Masten and Ellie Brenner also won four each in the 10&U girl’s age group. Masten’s meet was highlighted by her 57.22 in the 100 free, which moves her to 4th this season, while Brenner logged a 26.57 in the 50 free to take 7th nationally.
