Israeli 18-year-old Anastasia Gorbenko, who has been on fire in Abu Dhabi this week, opted not swim prelims of the women’s 200 IM this morning. The 200 breast is now Gorbenko’s only remaining event on her schedule. Prelims of the women’s 200 breast will be held tomorrow (Tuesday).
The reason for Gorbenko’s absence in the 200 IM this morning is unclear as of the time this article was published. She didn’t scratch the event, as she was still listed on the start list, and was one of the seven swimmers listed as DNS (Did Not Swim) on the results. It’s possible Gorbenko is just the latest swimmer to get caught up in the COVID protocols, but we can’t be sure yet. As of now, Gorbenko is still slated to race the 200 breast tomorrow, but we’ll be sure to update you if that changes.
Regardless, Gorbenko has had a highly successful Championships, pulling off a surprise win in the women’s 50 breast, before grabbing Gold in the women’s 100 IM as well. Gorbenko also broke the Israeli Records in both the 50 breast and 100 IM. She also finished in a tie for 10th in the women’s 100 back semifinals, and placed 11th in semifinals of the women’s 100 breast, shortly after winning the 100 IM.
Looks like it’s “load management” and not Covid related. She should swim the 200 breast tomorrow.
Not sure why the Israeli coaches decided on that move.

The official spokesperson on behalf of the Israeli Swimming Association (on their site) stated that Gorbenko will swim on tomorrow’s 200m breast preliminary session.
Covid protocols seem to have been questionable. Maybe they should have asked ISL for advice
