While his Pac 12 rivals Cal and Stanford have been racking up women’s recruits, USC head coach Dave Salo has lurked.
With his first verbal commitment of the fall, however, the Trojans have jumped into the recruiting game with a commitment from Hannah Weiss of the King Aquatic Club in Federal Way, Washington.
Weiss is probably about the 4th-best backstroker overall in the class of 2014, behind only recently-committed Kylie Stewart, but not by much. Weiss’ best times in yards are 52.75 and 1:55.54, and in meters she’s gone 1:00.77 and 2:15.64.
Weiss ranks 4th in the class in the 100 yard back (two of the three ahead of her, Janet Hu and Ally Howe, are both committed to Stanford), but ranks behind only Michigan commit Clara Smiddy in long course. She could rightfully be called the most balanced 100 backstroker in the class, which is significant given USC’s dual focus both in collegiate and international swimming.
Weiss swam the lead-off leg on KING’s 1:56.39 17-18 National Age Group Record breaking 200 meter medley relay earlier this year.
Weiss did not swim high school, but if she had, she almost surely would have been a Washington state champion.
