International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has confirmed the five candidates to host the 2024 Olympic Games, as the Host City Contract 2024 was published today. The cities include Hamburg, Germany; Paris, France; Budapest, Hungary; Los Angeles, United States; and Rome, Italy.
This is a reduction from the 7 applicant cities that bid for the 2016 Olympics but matches the 5 that made this stage in 2020 – part of a trend in decreased interest in hosting expensive Olympic Games. None of the 7 cities that bid for 2016 or 5 cities that bid for 2020 are in the running for 2024. Paris last bid in 2012.
“We are welcoming five outstanding and highly qualified Candidate Cities,” said Bach. “Olympic Agenda 2020 has shaped the Candidature Process more as an invitation and the cities have responded by engaging with the IOC through dialogue and cooperation. In the new invitation process the IOC learnt that all the candidates are embracing Olympic Agenda 2020 from their respective vision for the future of their city. Sustainability and legacy are the cornerstones of each candidature.”
Of its Los Angeles host submission, United States Olympic Committee (USOC) CEO Scott Blackmun stated, “The United States Olympic Committee is honored to submit the great city of Los Angeles to represent our nation in its quest to win the right to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With President Thomas Bach’s important Agenda 2020 initiative, it’s clear that the International Olympic Committee wants to partner with a city capable of hosting the Games responsibly, using the Games as a catalyst to further the vision of the city’s future and build a legacy that benefits its citizens and the Olympic Movement as a whole. When we look at LA – and the plans that Mayor Eric Garcetti, Casey Wasserman, and the team have built – we see the framework for an ideal match up.”
By way of declaring their candidacy, all five cities commit themselves to the Olympic Charter and Host City Contract for all participants of the Games and all Games-related matters. According to the official IOC announcement, changes were made to the Host City Contract including verbiage related to non-discrimination, freedom of the media and labour law amendments. Each revision can be read in its entirety here.
The IOC will continue to work in close collaboration with each Candidate City to provide them with the best possible services and assistance in the lead-up to the election, by the full IOC Membership, of the Host City by the 130th IOC Session in Lima, Peru in 2017.
The IOC will also stay in contact with Azerbaijan’s capital city of Baku, a once-potential bidder for the 2024 Games. The host of the inaugural European Games, Baku is already on the short list of cities expressing interest in hosting the 2028 Olympics.
On the subject, Bach stated to the press that “Baku and the IOC, came to the conclusion that it would need further evaluation for a bid for 2024, but that we would keep in contact with a view to develop a strong bid, maybe for 2028, or an appropriate date.”
I surely to trust 2024 is Los Angeles of USA and 2028 for St.Petersburg of Russia.
I vote Paris… 100 year celebration!
Sadly I think Security might be a big issue at the moment here
It’s between Hamburg, LA, and Paris as far as I can see, and I really like Hamburg’s bid plan.
