Russia’s Dmitrii Kokarev swam for a new European record this morning with 4:19.83, but returned in finals to break the World record in the men’s 200m freestyle S2 class with 4:12.76. Ukraine’s Serhii Palamarchuk finished in 4:21.76 for second place while Ievgen Panibratets took third with 4:31.53 for another Ukraine podium showing. Also swimming a World record for Russia was Valeriia Shabalina. She turned in a 2:08.29 during the morning session, but powered through finals to improve her prelims effort by five seconds and earned gold in 2:03.54. British Paralympic champion Jessica-Jane Applegate claimed the silver medal in 2:06.29 as Spain’s Michelle Alonso rounded out the podium with 2:16.87.
