Two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Spencer Merodio of Fairfield, California, has announced he will be continuing his education and swimming career at Claremont McKenna College this fall. Merodio is wrapping up his senior year at Armijo High School and trains year-round with DART Swimming.
In addition to being a Scholastic All-American, Merodio has also been recognized as an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate by his high school for his academic achievements. His other academic accolades include being a four-time Sierra Nevada Swimming Scholar Athlete and a four-time Armijo High School Scholar athlete.
He shared why he chose Claremont McKenna with SwimSwam:
“I chose to attend Claremont McKenna College for the opportunities it provides me to pursue an advanced degree and my education. Claremont McKenna College will provide me with varied pathways to success, and ways to pursue knowledge. One aspect that stands out as intriguing to me is how students are given license to explore courses outside their declared major. Thisapproach will position me to succeed in any job, industry, or situation. In addition to the academic opportunities, I admire the work ethic, reputation, cohesiveness, and team culture thatI found at CMC. I am so excited to be a stag!”
Merodio is a versatile swimmer who swims anything from mid-distance to distance freestyle and IM. He owns his high school team records in the 100, 200, and 500 freestyle, and has a Winter Junior Nationals qualifying time in the 800m freestyle.

Claremont McKenna College is located in Claremont, California. The swim team is a co-op between Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd College, and Scripps College, which competes as a Division III program in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). The Stags finished first at this year’s SCIAC Championships, tallying a total of 914 points.
Merodio would have been the team’s 2nd-fastest performer in the 200 freestyle and 400 IM this past season, putting him in a good position to make an immediate impact when arrives on campus. Leading the way in the 200 freestyle was junior Anderson Breazeale, who clocked a 1:39.55 at the SCIAC Championships. Freshman Henrik Barck was the top performer in the 400 IM with a season best time of 3:59.02.
With his commitment, he joins Arizona native Adam VanLuvanee in the Stags’ class of 2027. VanLuvanee will be attending Harvey Mudd College, and swims IM and freestyle.
