Michael Phelps Swims 100 Butterfly Heats at PSS-Orlando (RACE VIDEO)

2016 ORLANDO PRO SWIM SERIES DAY 1 PRELIMS

Swimming superstar Michael Phelps begin his racing at the Arena Pro Swim Series – Orlando meet on Thursday morning with a 53.07 in the 100 meters butterfly.

That makes him the 3rd qualifier into finals behind Tom Shields (53.04) and Brazil’s Henrique Martins (52.99): each of whom raced in a different heat during the morning’s events.

There wasn’t much clear separation among the whole of the top 8 in the morning heats, with the top 5 all splitting the race effectively the same way (out around 25.0, back in 28-low or 27-high). The top 3 have all shown the ability to get down to 52-lows even this far out from a taper meet, and so that’s where the battle will be – including an intriguing domestic one between Shields and Phelps that has developed into as much of a domestic rivalry as there can be in swimming given their relatively small overlap in the elite ranks.

Finals will begin at 6PM U.S. Eastern Time.

Has anybody ever seen Michael’s ritual on the blocks interrupted before? I’ve always wondered if it was going to happen.
