In a heartbreaking turn of events Katerine Savard was defeated by both Penny Oleksiak and Noemie Thomas in the 100m butterfly and had to watch her Canadian record fall as she missed out on the Olympic team in her best event.
While most athletes would be crushed, Savard stayed focused on her goal of qualifying for the Olympic team. In the 200m freestyle, Savard finished third behind Brittany MacLean who set a new Canadian record, and once again Oleksiak.
Savard’s third place finish guarantees her a spot on the Olympic squad as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team.
Savard will have two more chances this meet to qualify an individual event: the 200m butterfly and the 100m freestyle.
Tonight Savard will race the 200m fly where she’s the second seed overall behind Audrey Lacroix. Savard will need to finish either first or second and dip under the FINA ‘A’ qualifying time of 2:09.33 in order to get selected individually for Rio.
Savard’s best time is a 2:07.61 that she swam at the 2014 Canadian Trials, and if she’s anywhere close to that mark she should be set up to compete in the event individually this summer.
