WATCH: Age Group Phenom Regan Smith Wins Austin 50 Back Shooutouts

2018 PRO SWIM SERIES – AUSTIN

The 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Austin brought something new to the table. Swimmers competed in “shootout” style rounds of the stroke 50s. The first round (quarterfinal) included the top 8 swimmers from prelims. The top 4 then advanced to round 2 (semifinal). The top 2 from the semifinal round advanced to the final showdown (round 3).

SwimSwam has put together the videos from the Shootout finals. Below are the videos of the women’s 50 back. It all came down to Regan Smith vs. Olivia Smoliga, with 15-year-old Smith taking the win in 27.85. That marked her first sub-28 swim in the event. Videos of the other stroke shootouts for the men and women will get their own separate posts. SwimSwam will also be posting the videos of A finals in all other events.

This time 27.85 would place her #18 in last season rankings. Still way to go to join elite group. But she would be in close proximity to Sarah Sjostrom (#14 – 27.80) which is a nice neighborhood.

And she made Riptides’ State team according to her cap! Love the age grouper that’s still in her.

Regan Smith sure looks like the future of women’s backstroke. I assume she will get bigger and stronger — and her stroke and tempo look fantastic already.

She’s already one of the greatest backstrokers hope she only continues to get better! Her fly is pretty good also.
