Russia’s Vladimir Morozov has become the second swimmer in 2016 to break six figures in prize money on the FINA World Cup circuit with an $8.5K meet in Dubai.
Morozov has now racked up $105K for the season, second only to Katinka Hosszu‘s $122.5K. Both are in line for $50,000 cluster bonuses this weekend as long as they don’t blow huge point leads at the cluster finale in Doha.
Jeanette Ottesen ($64K), Chad le Clos ($61.2K), Philip Heintz ($52.5K) and Yulia Efimova ($51.7K) are the other top earners so far, all breaking $50,000 in prize earnings.
PRIZE MONEY SYSTEM
Event Prizes
Prize money is given to the top 3 in each individual event:
- Gold: $1500
- Silver: $1000
- Bronze: $500
NEW IN 2016: Prize money is also given to the top 3 mixed relay teams (though no series points are earned).
- Gold: $3000
- Silver: $2000
- Bronze: $1000
In our money lists, we’ve given each relay member one quarter of that money, which amounts to $750 for a win, $500 for second and $250 for third.
World Record Bonuses
Each world record is worth a $10,000 bonus.
Cluster Bonuses
The 9-meet series is broken into 3 clusters of 3 meets each. Each cluster awards bonuses for the top 6 athletes in points over those three meets. An athlete must swim all 3 meets in the cluster to earn a cluster bonus:

- 2nd: $35,000
- 3rd: $30,000
- 4th: $20,000
- 5th: $10,000
- 6th: $5,000
Series Bonuses
And the series as a whole will give out bonuses to the top 3 men and women in total series points:
- 1st: $100,000
- 2nd: $50,000
- 3rd: $30,000

I’m guessing they don’t drug test at these meets??
SwimDad – they do.
Prenot got that money in the bank.
Wow! So Hosszu and Morozov will make $250K – $300K in just 9 meets?! Is my math wrong?
This would be a great system to have in America, post-grad swimmers would have a way to support themselves(and if the NCAA ever decides to share their billions and allow college athletes to compete for money, the quality of competition would get even better)
Then the first thing college athletes could do is re imburse the state taxpayer . Good idea.
Music and band majors can earn money playing at bars, why can’t athletes use their skills while they’re at their peak to support themselves? Not everyone has a full ride or rich parents to help with car/phone payments etc
Yes but there’ s no biz like showbiz . That $100 bucks on a Saturday night might be the pinnacle of their career . Be sensitive to these poor things – like none are goi g to make it .
