Lenoir City, Tennessee’s Alex Hines has made a vebal commitment to swim at Virginia Tech starting next year.
“I chose Virginia Tech for the renowned engineering school, energized coaching staff, and unrivaled team atmosphere. The city of Blacksburg is beautiful and I can’t wait to spend the next 4 years of my life as a Hokie!”
Hines is a senior at L&N Stem Academy in Knoxville. He was the runner-up in both the 200 IM (1:51.31) and 500 free (4:32.25) at the 2016 TISCA High School Swimming and Diving Championships. The previous year he was fifth in the IM (1:53.59) and eighth in the 100 breast (58.98). Hines also swims for Tennessee Aquatics, with whom he had a stellar Atlanta Futures meet this summer, reaching the finals in the 200m free, 100m breast, 200m breast, and 200m IM and achieving personal-bests in all four.
Hines has had a remarkable trajectory during his high school years, both in long course meters and in short course yards, and could turn out to be a stealth recruit for the H2Okies. Here are just a sampling of his best SCY events and the evolution he has undergone since freshman year:
