Virginia freshman Brendan Casey captured gold on the final day of the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships Sunday (Aug. 31).
The first-year from Santa Monica, Calif., placed first in the men’s 10k open water event in a time of 1:58:00.00, only one second ahead of second-place Jon McKay of Canada.
Casey also competed in the pool earlier in the meet, placing ninth in the 800m free (8:22.77), 10th in the 1,500m free (15:35.89) and 11th in the 200m back (2:06.12).
Casey became the first Cavalier to win gold at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships since sophomore Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who captured the 400m free and 800m free titles in 2012.

This is a press release? UVA is using “freshman” instead of “first year?” I must say, I’ve never had much of a reason to read a UVA athletic press release before, but still, considering how many times I’ve had Wahoos insist I use their terminology, this is a bit unnerving. Do they use “campus” in press releases instead of “grounds,” too?
(All in good fun, folks, all in good fun).
(But seriously, they can be very particular about their vocabulary).
The win is impressive, but only if anyone knew exactly HOW impressive
The times should be listed as h:mm:ss.00… you have them written a m:ss.00
