California freshman Ryan Murphy told SwimSwam at the Austin Grand Prix that he experimented with a different strategy in his 200 back win, taking a little off the front half in hopes of coming home faster. Murphy won the race over his training partner Jacob Pebley.
The Cal men at this meet are coming off of some altitude training in Colorado. Murphy talks about that as well as who’s a better practice swimmer between he and Pebley.
They were in altitude for training so it’s not surprising to see the Cal men swim very good times in the 200 back.
Murphy was great but I was also impressed by Pebley. Murphy had better underwaters but Pebley was faster above the water. I believe Mr Pebley has been injured in the last years and it must have slowed his progression. Happy to see him back stronger than ever.
