BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Feb. 2, 2020) – The USMMA men’s swimming & diving team earned a 191-107 road win over NCAA Division 1 opponent St. Francis College on Sunday at the Terriers’ SFC Aquatic Center. The Mariners’ second big victory in as many days improves their record to 7-2 overall.
Merchant Marine won 11 of the 16 events during the meet. Three different Mariners were victorious in two events each – senior Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) won the 100 breaststroke (56.55) and the 500 freestyle (4:53.76), junior Daniel Moore (Riverview, Fla.) triumphed the 200 free in a season-best 1:45.16 and the 100 free (47.57) and classmate Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) won both the one-meter dive (257.15) and the three-meter (264.55).
Four others also picked up individual wins, as junior Jack Higgins (Needham, Mass.) touched first in the 50 free (21.79), sophomore Matthew Mizell (Merritt Island, Fla.) won the 200 backstroke (2:01.71) senior Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.) beat the pack in the 200 breast (2:16.39) and classmate Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) was triumphant in the 100 butterfly (52.59).
Additionally, the 200 medley relay team of Weaver, sophomore Patrick Tolloti (Dover, Ohio), Monahan and junior Jack Welch (Chesapeake, Va.) started the meet with a win in 1:35.31.
The following Mariner swimmers also achieved season-best times.
- Freshman Jack Pellegrino (Cape Coral, Fla.) in the 1000 free by 17 seconds (10:17.30)
- Sophomore Jake Breschi (Perry Hall, Md.) in the 1000 free by four seconds (10:02.99)
- Junior John Cairns (Durham, N.C.) in the 200 free by four seconds (1:46.76)
- Welch in the 100 free by .5 seconds (1:58.49)
- Sophomore John Jansen (Tampa, Fla.) in the 200 breast by six seconds (2:17.58)
- Sophomore James Kaleel (Ortonville, Mich.) in the 500 free by one second (5:08.90)
- And junior Kyle Pins (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the 200 individual medley (2:07.20)

The Terriers’ men’s squad was topped by the Merchant Marine Academy, 191-107, while the women’s team was defeated by Sacred Heart, 155-144.
Men’s swimming co-captain Micah Wesselhoff had a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.33. The Terriers had a trio of seniors compete in the 100-yard breaststroke. Raphaelle Gregoire, Lara Milak, and Fanny Stromstedt swept the event taking first, second, and third-place, respectively. Gregoire put up a time of 1:07.87, Milak completed with a 1:08.56, and Stromstedt touched the wall at 1:09.08.
Freshman Mariajose Lopez took first-place in the 1000-yard freestyle, coming in with a time of 10:50.00. Angelica Stark also had a strong race, putting up a time of 11:11.58, which earned her second-place in the 1000-yard freestyle.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Ana Paula Montes de Oca took first-place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.11). The junior also took second-place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.69.
- Belgrade native Dorde Spasic earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, with an impressive time of 1:46.35. He also took second-place in the 100-yard freestyle.
- Abigail Wood had strong second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall with a time of 1:03.00. Carmen Botha came in not too far behind taking fourth-place with a time of 1:05.31.
- Kayla McKenzie took second-place in the 3-meter dive as she posted a mark of 214.55.
- Beatriz Gomes Angelo had a great finish to her 200-yard backstroke taking third-place with a time of 2:14.88.
- Binald Mahmuti notched a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a final time of 2:01.27. The junior also recorded a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.39).
- Kavin Duraku took third-place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.62. Meriton Veliu came in right behind him taking fourth-place (2:21.12).
- In the women’s 100-yard freestyle Jovana Terzic and Hanne Romstad placed in the top five. Terzic took second with a time of 55.87 and Romstad finished with a time of 57.03 taking fourth-place.
- Benedek Lendvai dominated in the 1000-yard freestyle taking first-place for the Terriers. The Budapest native executed his race in a time of 10:00.43.
- Senior Julie Olivares competed in the 100-yard backstroke and finished with a time of 1:14.30.
- To close out the meet, the men took second-place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The relay squad consisted of Andrew Gubarev, Andrej Sokolovski, Wesselhoff, and Spasic, who came out with a time of 1:29.10. The men’s team also took second-place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.77. This squad consisted of Ricardo Berenguer, Tadeu Rodrigues, Matheus Santos, and Zane Drobenko.

The Terriers are back in action for their Conference Championships. The women’s team takes part in the NEC Championship from February 19-22, while the men’s squad competes in the Metropolitan Championship from February 20-23.
