DAVIS, Calif – The UC Santa Barbara women’s swim team won a dual meet against MPSF opponent UC Davis on Saturday morning at Schaal Aquatics Center by a score of 171.5-117.5. The win marks the Gauchos’ (6-1, 4-0) sixth straight dual meet victory, with their sole loss coming in the season-opener at UCLA. The men (6-0, 3-0) also swam at Davis, but competed amongst themselves due to Davis’ lack of a men’s team.
Head Coach Matt Macedo praised his teams’ ability to perform despite the conditions, saying “While it was very cold [Friday and Saturday], the team did a nice job figuring out a way to get through the discomfort and pick up wins over conference opponents.”
The womens’ win took a balanced effort, with 18 different Gauchos earning top-three finishes. Emily Boggess, Emily Ward, Zoe Cosgrove, and Heaven Quintana each contributed two first-place wins. Boggess won the 1650 Free (17:13.87) and 500 Free (5:00.67), Ward the 100 Free (54.24) and 200 Free (1:51.62), Cosgrove the 100 Back (55.73) and 200 Back (2:01.88), and Quintana the 100 Fly (56.57) and 200 Fly (2:04.23). Other first-place winners were Bryn McGowan (50 Free, 24.05) and Brittney Straw (200 Breast, 2:20.50), who also finished third in the 100 Breast (1:07.45). Freshman Tegan Preston picked up her first career first-place victory, winning the 100 Breast (1:05.62), while also finishing third in the 200 Breast (2:25.66).
The Gauchos started the day off strong with the 200 Medley Relay, as the “A” relay team took first (1:43.41), and the “B” team took third (1:46.38).
Rachel Forbes finished second in the 500 Free (5:01.74) and third in the 1650 Free (17:26.34), while Elena England was second in the 200 Back (2:05.17) and third in the 200 Free (1:54.01). Haley Herzberg finished second in the 1650 Free (17:16.44), Gillian Flath in the 100 Back (58.68), Nicola Churchill in the 100 Breast (1:07.39), and Molly McCance in the 200 Fly (2:06.04). Rounding out the effort for the Gauchos were Tara Middleton, Dora Seggelke, Lucy Fellner, Lexi Fusari, and Jacqueline Harris who each contributed third-place finishes.
“Both [Forbes] and [Boggess] had many tough events over the two days and I was proud of the way they raced. Senior captain Haley Herzberg was just off her lifetime best in the 1650 against Davis which was nice to see heading into conference next month,” said Macedo. He continued, “The staff and team look forward to senior day against Cal Poly in a couple of weeks.”
The meet against Cal Poly will be the last of the regular season, and will take place on Feb. 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Campus Pool.

Davis, Calif. – Aggie swimmers braved brisk winds Saturday morning in their first MPSF match up of the season against UC Santa Barbara, falling 171.5-117.5 to the visiting Gauchos.
Swimming on the second day of back-to-back meets after traveling to San Jose State on Friday, the Aggies posted nine top-three finishes against UC Santa Barbara.
Kyla Leacox was the Aggies’ top finisher on the day, winning the 200 IM in 2:05.62 with Olivia Greenberg putting up a season-best 2:10.2 for second and Sophia Sebastian rounding out the top three. Olivia Smith picked up points in the 200 and 500 Frees, finishing second and third respectively less than 24 hours after dominating both of those events in San Jose.
Mia Cunnan and Jamie Pincin combined to go 2-3 respectively in the 50 Free in 23.49 and 24.55 while Pincin came back to take second in the 100 Free in 52.69. Cunnan also finished third in the 200 Back. The Aggies got another second place finish from Rachel Pride in the 200 Breast in 2:24.47 and Ashley Ma took second in the 100 Fly.
Sydney Wren swept the 1 and 3-meter boards with scores of 274.20 and 313.25 respectively. Wren’s 3-meter score establishes a new team-best mark and is her second NCAA Zone Diving Standard qualifying score of the season.
UC Davis will return to Schaal Aquatic Center next Saturday, January 25th, to host Fresno State in a meet that will also feature as the Aggies’ Senior Day to honor this year’s seven seniors.
