After swimming fairly well on the first day of the duel in the pool, American Tyler Clary has pulled out of day 2 of the 2011 Duel in the Pool with some soreness in his rotator cuff.
Clary said that he tweaked the shoulder on Thursday during final preparations for this meet that he tweaked it, and that by the time he finished racing on Friday he could barely get it above his head.
He plans to see a doctor when he returns to Fullerton after the meet, but for now it seems as though the American coaching staff is taking this injury very seriously. “Can’t raise it above his head” is more serious than just a little bit of soreness. If this injury keeps him out of the water for any significant period of time, that would open up for some very interesting battles at the Olympic Trials.
Rotator cuff injuries usually require total immobilization (even kicking becomes difficult), and can linger for months. This is bad news for the Americans in London.
