Tribe Men’s Swimming Adds Six for 2018-19 Season

William & Mary Director of Swimming Matt Crispino ’02 announced the addition of six men to the Tribe roster today, who will join W&M ahead of the 2018-19 season. The class includes four from the state of Virginia as well as standouts from North Carolina and New Jersey, and brings W&M’s roster to 27 for the upcoming season. Between them, the six men in the Class of 2022 would have accounted for 23 finals swims at the CAA Championships last year, including nine championship-finalists.

Ryan Bebel – 6-3, Breast/IM
Westfield, N.J./Westfield

100 breast – 57.31; 200 breast – 2:03.45; 200 IM – 1:53.98

Prep: Reached the consolation finals in two events at the YMCA Nationals in both 2017 and 2018 … Also a Winter Junior Nationals Qualifier each of the past two years … Helped Westfield claim the New Jersey State Championship in 2016 … Four-time county championship team … Scholastic All-American … Honor Roll all four years … Member of the Operation Smile Club … Also ran cross country for a time, winning a pair of county championships.

Personal: Son of Peter and Nancy Bebel … Twin brother, Eric, is on the swim team at Bryant … Enjoys art, hiking, basketball, and running … Undecided as to his collegiate major.

 

Ian Cobb – 5-9, Breast/IM
Vienna, Va./James Madison

100 breast – 58.02; 200 breast – 2:06.37; 200 IM – 1:56.98

Prep: Consolation finalist at the NCSA Junior Nationals … Took eighth in the Virginia 6A State Championships 100 breast as a senior … Helped Madison finish second in the state as a team each of the past two years … Holds the school record as part of the 200 medley relay … Member of the National Society of High School Scholars … Scholastic All-American qualifier … Has played the classical piano for 13 years.

Personal: Son of Jeffrey and Selena Cobb … Enjoys music composition, and playing both the classical and contemporary piano … Plans to major in physics.

 

Jack Galbraith – 5-7, Back/Fly
Vienna, Va./James Madison

100 back – 49.99; 200 back – 1:49.32; 100 fly – 50.01

Prep: Qualified for Winter Nationals in both backstrokes in 2017 … Finished 30th in the 100 back and 21st in the 200 back … Named first-team All-State each of the last two years … Finished third in the 100 fly and fourth in the 100 back as a senior at the Virginia 6A state championships … NISCA Prep All-American … Named honorable mention All-Met by the Washington Post his junior year, improving to second-team as a senior … Scholastic All-American … Officer in the Latin Club … Member of the DECA Club.

Personal: Son of Andrew Galbraith and Alison Galbraith … Enjoys hiking, cliff jumping, and hanging out with friends … Undecided as to his collegiate major.

 

Graham Hertweck – 6-2, Free/Fly
Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley

Prep: Won the North Carolina 4A state championship in the 50 free … Also finished second in the 100 free … Scholastic All-American … Member of the National Honor Society … AP Scholar with Distinction … Also a member of the Spanish National Honor Society … Earned his Eagle Scout award with the Boy Scouts, and the Order of the Arrow.

Personal: Son of Don and Laura Hertweck … Cousin, Anna Hertweck, played softball at North Carolina … Enjoys camping, biking, and kayaking … Plans to major in biology.

 

Steven Thalblum – 5-6, Free/Fly/IM
Ashburn, Va./Stonebridge

200 fly – 1:47.03; 100 fly – 48.54; 200 IM – 1:48.98; 400 IM – 3:54.31; 200 free – 1:39.91; 100 back – 50.01

Prep: USA Swimming Scholastic All-American … 2018 NCSA Junior National Champion in the 100 IM … Swam the seventh-fastest U18 time ever in 49.93 … Runner-up in both the 200 IM and the 100 fly at the 2017 Virginia 5A state championships … Repeated in both event as a senior … Member of the National Honors Society.

Personal: Son of David Thalblum and Hui Lui … Enjoys cliff jumping, video games, and recreational sports … Undecided as to his collegiate major.

 

Kade Younger – 5-10, Back/Fly/IM
Newport News, Va./Menchville

Prep: Helped Menchville win the Virginia 5A state championship in 2016 … Winter Junior National qualifier … Scholastic All-American each of the past two years … Served as both historian and treasurer of the Student Council.
