On the day before TCU’s first dual meet of the 2014-2015 season, they’ve filled out their coaching staff by making an internal promotion. John Funk has been elevated to a full-time assistant coach, the school announced today, after a year spent as a graduate assistant.

In addition to on-deck responsibilities as an assistant, he will take over the role of ‘men’s team coordinator,” head coach Richard Sybesma said.

“John brings a wealth of experience as a great swimmer from Rider University, and he has been an asset to our program as a Graduate Assistant,” Sybesma said. “John is a tireless recruiter, great coach, and has unbelievable energy for the sport of swimming.”

As alluded to by Sybesma, Funk was three-times named the team MVP at Division I Rider University, including leading them to back-to-back MAAC titles in 2012 and 2013.

He was primarily an IM’er and a 200 backstroker, which meshes well with the specialties of TCU’s best male swimmer, NCAA qualifier Cooper Robinson, who is also a backstroker.

Funk fills an opening that was left in July when Colgate announced former TCU assistant Andy Waeger as their new head coach.
