Cal’s Long Gutierrez was back in action today in the Golden Bears’ first meet of 2017. Transfer Matt Josa also made his season debut, swimming in his first NCAA meet with Cal.
It’s still a dogfight at the top, with defending champs Texas playing their cards closer to the vest, California exploding at the Georgia Invite and NC State continuing to swim good opponents very tough.
There are 4 swimmers ranked #1 in multiple individual events: Chase Kalisz, Clark Smith, Caeleb Dressel, and Ryan Murphy.
Baker and Bilquist traded blows through the first portion of the race, with Baker taking the early lead at the 100, but Bilquist fighting back for the edge at the 150. In the end, Baker had a breakthrough, roaring to a 1:49.83 victory ahead of Bilquist’s 1:50.06.
Cal freshman Abbey Weitzeil blasted a 47.22 to top 100 free prelims on the way to an NCAA ‘A’ cut and the fastest time in the NCAA this year.
On the women’s side, Cal’s Noemie Thomas was arguably the most impressive swimmer of the evening. Thomas blasted a 50.67 in the 100 fly to lead a 1-2 finish with teammate Farida Osman (51.20).
The big story in the 100 breast was Florida State’s Natalie Pierce picking up an NCAA ‘A’ time with her 58.25, which sits as the 2nd fastest time in the NCAA this season behind only Olympic champ Lilly King.
Kalisz was just hundredths shy of his personal best time in the 200 IM tonight, taking down a stacked field with his winning time of 1:41.26.
