Flordia native Megan Romano was born in St. Petersburg on February 2, 1991 to parents Rhonda and Thomas. Romano started swimming with St. Petersburg Aquatics (SPA) when she was six years old. She was quite a natural in the water, setting a National Age Group record in the 13-14 100 freestyle. As part of the Northeast High School swim team, Romano was a multiple time Florida state champion, winning every individual event that she swam. By the age of sixteen, Romano had qualified to compete in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, 100 back, and 200 back at the 2008 US Olympic Trials. Although Romano did not make the 2008 Olympic team she had become a highly coveted college prospect. She chose to further her swimming career at the University of Georgia under the tutelage of legendary coach Jack Bauerle. The freestyle and backstroke dynamo had her first taste of international competition in 2011 at the World University Games in Shenzen, China. She helped the United States to a gold medal in the 800 meter free relay. She was also part of the silver medal winning 400 meter free relay and the 400 meter medley relay.
