The first American female athlete in history to win four gold medals in a single Olympics, Amy Van Dyken started swimming at age six in order to strengthen her lungs against severe bouts of asthma. Van Dyken was born on February 15, 1973 in Denver, Colorado. She trained with both ACES Swim Club and Colorado Rapids Swim Team as an age grouper, quickly becoming one of the best swimmers int he United States. As a member of the Cherry Creek High School swim team she set three state records and was a six-time high school All-American. Her speed only improved as she moved into her college swimming career. Van Dyken spent two years at the University of Arizona where she second in the 50 free and third in the 100 fly at the 1991 NCAA Division 1 championships. At the 1992 Olympic Trials she narrowly missed making the Olympic team, finishing 4th in the 50 free. Van Dyken was not satisfied with her progress at Arizona, however, and she transferred to Colorado State University for her junior and senior years of college.
