Swimming’s TopTenTweets of the Week: #6 Beisel Throws it Back to her First Olympic Medal

It was a big week on twitter, as Olympic Day, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage, the OT countdown, and more dominated the Twitterverse. Did you make the list? Check below to find out!

Junior National Teamer Cassidy Bayer is no stranger to getting up before the crack of dawn. 4AM is darn early for any time of the year, especially the summer.

Woah is right. 1:59 in practice is something serious, especially for USC’s Chelsea Chenault, who has a lifetime best of 1:58.19. In 2012, she qualified for the 200 freestyle FINAL at Olympic Trials with a 1:58.64. With a time like that in practice, watch out for her name as Rio draws nearer.

Our very own Lauren Neidigh is having it rough. Don’t get us wrong: having Chipotle is a great thing at any time of the day. However, when you toss out your wallet with your leftover burrito, it doesn’t bode well for your future Chipotle endeavors. Best of luck, Lauren.

Luke Greenbank smashed through the Junior WR in the 200m backstroke for Gold at the 2015 Baku Games that just wrapped up. Thanks to Team GB for also including a video with such fantastic quality/clarity!

Olympic Day was June 23rd, and U.S. Olympian Elizabeth Beisel celebrated by throwing it back to her experiences in London after winning her first Olympic medal. Beisel took home silver in the 400m IM as well as a bronze in the 200m back in 2012.

Happy tweeting from backstroker David Plummer after the U.S. Supreme Court decision to rule same-sex marriage as legal across the entire nation.

#4

Natalie Coughlin, one of the nation’s long-time sprint queens, is seen here way back when, trying to get an autograph from Olympian Summer Sanders.

#3

WOW Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace!! 355 pounds is ridiculous. The Bahamian sprint star holds national records in five different events individually. She owns the world’s #4 time in the 50m free and #5 time in the 50m fly from this year. ALSO, SHE CAN SQUAT 355 POUNDS!

#2

Yeah, it’s our own tweet. But this had 419 of you rejoicing for the glory that is the 100 IM. An event that used to be found only in college swimmers’ dreams can now be a reality.

We’re less than one year away from the 2016 Olympic Trials. This is the big meet for any and all swimmers chasing their Olympic dreams. Featuring some of the best swimmers to ever grace the pool, the Trials are going to be huge. Get ready. They’ll be here before you know it.

That’s it for us in the second-ever edition of Swimming’s TopTenTweets. Follow us right here on Twitter and keep an eye out for next week’s feature!

Kinda nervous??? That “squat” was downright dangerous!! A potential career ender! No doubt Arianna is strong, but that load, like her squat depth, is far too high.

Correct! A friend of mine who was both an NBA (Nets) as well as Olympic (USA Bobsled team) strength and conditioning coach told me that squatting onto a bench is very dangerous, because it causes you to lose that protective natural arch in your lumbar spine, not to mention the fact that she bounced off the bench. Is she impressively strong? Oh yes. Is that too much weight for her? Hell yes! The risk vs. benefit ratio for her is not worth it!!!

A better way I should have worded it is that squatting onto a bench can make you lose “neutral spine” which of course means a slight curve in the lumber spine. Spinal flexion (think pelvic tilt or crunch) is very dangerous to your discs under a heavy load. There are many good videos online about proper squat technique with Dr. Stuart McGill, world renowned professor of Spine Biomechanics.

A chiropractor once told me that movements done with poor spinal positions are sometimes a case of “the straw that broke the camel’s back”. We seem to “get away” with improper movement for some time, and then one day we bend over to tie our shoe and collapse in a heap… Read more »
