Fast swimming was on display in suburban Milwaukee last weekend at the 2025 Wisconsin YMCA State Championships. 17-year-old Alana Berlin from the Schroeder YMCA Swim Team was the clear headline, as she helped her team win two relays with some exceptional splits.
Berlin, a high school senior and Stanford commit, swam a 50 backstroke best time of 23.71 leading off Schroeder’s victorious 200 medley relay. That eclipsed her previous best of 23.97, resulting in a 0.26-second time drop.
That 50 backstroke split would have been faster than all but 10 leadoff splits at last week’s NCAA Championships – and she still has a full year to go before her first (likely) NCAA appearance.
Stanford freshman Annika Parkhe swam the backstroke leg for Stanford at NCAAs, and she clocked a best time of 24.23. The Cardinal touched 2nd to Virginia in a school record time of 1:33.00, and subbing in Berlin’s split of 23.71 would have put them at 1:32.48. While Virginia won in an NCAA record time of 1:31.10, they will not return Alex Walsh or Gretchen Walsh next year, who were their most dominant legs.
With Berlin joining, Stanford could be considered the way-too-early favorite to win their first 200 medley relay title since 2018, as they return every other leg of the relay.

In addition to her 50 backstroke performance, Berlin also clocked a 21.56 anchor split on Schroeder’s winning 200 freestyle relay, which is a full second under her flat-start best time of 22.68. Her split would have been the third-quickest on Stanford’s 3rd place 200 free relay at NCAAs, where Torri Huske (20.92 leadoff, 20.39 relay swing on medley relay) led the way ahead of Gigi Johnson (3rd leg, 21.31), Lucy Thomas (2nd leg, 21.60), and Amy Tang (anchor leg, 21.86).
While Berlin is a pure sprinter, that’s not the only area where she’s improving: she also swam a new lifetime best in the 500 freestyle (4:57.73). That was her only individual swim of the weekend, and she won by over 13 seconds.
Berlin is one of the most versatile swimmers in the class of 2025, boasting an impressive resume. In addition to the previously mentioned events, she also holds the following times:

- 200 Backstroke: 1:57.03
- 100 Butterfly: 51.46
- 100 Freestyle: 49.04
- 200 Freestyle: 1:48.74
- 100 Breaststroke: 1:01.46
- 200 Breaststroke: 2:13.00
- 200 IM: 1:57.54
Will be interesting to see how Greg Meehan develops her endurance, as she is a very versatile sprinter
dang shes been on a nice improvement trajectory. think itll still be pretty close between her and levenia for the sprint backstroke leg next year.
im actually most curious about her 200 im. she had a big drop to 157 at winter juniors and is surprisingly versatile — has obviously great fl and bk times, solid fr times, and decent br times (101 & 213).
i think we’re all excited about the uprise of Stanford – I missed them

She also went 22.47 for a 50 fly split few weekends ago at state
This will be huge for Stanford next year.
Looks like Stanford just found their key piece for the relay medley relay next year as well as another freestyle leg
natty is looking more and more in reach for next year
its going to be a barnburner like the mens race this year! think stanford still has a fairly steep hill to climb tho — uva will have some potent relay legs in mintenko, canny, novelline & texas is bringing in some pretty elite international young guns (padar, okaro, miller) along w a pretty strong domestic class as well….
