Sprinter Veronika Owen Sends Verbal To William & Mary (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Veronika Owen of Herndon, Virginia, has announced her verbal commitment to further her education and swimming at the College of William & Mary next fall. Owen, a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, is currently a senior at South Lakes High School.

“I’m so excited to continue my swimming journey at W&M. Go Tribe!”

Owen trains year-round with Nation’s Capital Swim Club, where she primarily focuses on sprint freestyle and butterfly. This summer Owen wrapped up her long course season at the USA Swimming Futures Championship in Richmond, where she logged her highest finish in the 50m freestyle at 20th (27.02). She also advanced to finals in the 100m fly, clocking a 1:04.08 for 24th overall. Her personal best in the event stands at 1:02.66, which she recorded in 2022.

Highlighting Owen’s short course season was Speedo Sectionals in Christiansburg. She dropped nearly two tenths in the 100 freestyle to post a best time of 54.18, taking 22nd overall. She also notched season best times in the 100 fly (56.84) and 50 free (24.91), placing 14th and 39th, respectively.

Owen is also a Virginia High School State finalist, as this February she finished 10th in the 100 fly with a time of 57.83 in finals.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 free – 24.63
  • 100 free – 54.18
  • 100 fly – 56.45
  • 200 fly – 2:09.22

The Tribe women were the runner-up team at the 2023 CAA Championships this past February. Owen is currently closest to CAA scoring range in the 100 fly, as it took a 55.81 to make it out of prelims this year.

The 100 fly was one of the events that William & Mary won, as Sophia Heilen took the title with a time of 52.96. Lauren Klinefelter and Lindsay Juhlin also scored in the event, as they recorded times of 55.12 and 55.51 to finish 13th and 14th, respectively. All three are sophomores this season, meaning Owen will be joining a deep sprint fly group.

Owen joins a large incoming class next fall including Claire Neilly, Healey Morgan, Tess Lankford, Carly Frank, Caroline Scharff, and Grace McCardle
