Sprinter Erin Fentress Opts To Remain In-State With OSU (2023)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Erin Fentress has announced that she’ll be headed to the Ohio State University this fall to continue her education and swimming career. Fentress is from Milford, Ohio, where she attends Milford High School and swims with the Milford Area Swim Team.

Fentress is following in the footsteps of her older brother, Evan Fentress, who recently wrapped up his freshman season at Ohio State. Fentress’ father is also an Ohio State alumni.

I chose to swim at The Ohio State University because it has been my dream since I was a kid to be a Buckeye. I also felt right at home when I was there and see myself being the most successful I can be there.”

Fentress specializes in sprint to mid-distance freestyle, with range from the 50 to 200. She recently kicked off her long course season at the Indianapolis Sectionals, where she earned her highest finish in the 50m freestyle (27.46). She also competed in the 100m free (1:00.58), 200m free (2:14.73), and 100m back (1:11.23).

Prior to Sectionals, she wrapped up her high school season at the Division I Ohio High School State Championships, where she advanced to finals in both of her events. She ended up finishing 5th in the 50 free in 23.59, and 6th in the 100 free with a time of 51.80 in finals.

Many of her best times come from meets in November and December. She dropped a few tenths in the 100 free to hit a 51.30 in November, then shaved off nearly a second in her 200 free a month later (1:52.82).

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 free – 23.55
  • 100 free – 51.30
  • 200 free – 1:52.82

The Buckeyes are coming off of their 4th-consecutive Big Ten title. Sprint freestyle has consistently been a strength of theirs, especially at the conference level. This year, Ohio State swept the top three spots in the 50 freestyle, led by Katherine Zenick (21.85). Amy Fulmer and Teresa Ivan finished 2nd and 3rd, with just a hundredth of a second separating them.

Fulmer was also the runner-up in the 200 freestyle (1:43.45), and the Big Ten champion in the 100 freestyle (47.02). She was joined by Zenick and Ivan in the A-final of the 100, as they picked up 3rd and 4th, respectively. Fentress will have the opportunity to join a talented sprint group, as both Zenick and Ivan will still be on campus next season.

Fentress joins California native Bella Fisco in Ohio State’s class of 2027. Fisco swims fly and breaststroke events, owning a best time of 54.02 in the 100 fly.

Confused by these coaches. Cut swimmers one week, allow walk ons with times slower than the entire roster the next.
