Sprint News 5/23/12: Jonty Official, Pool Construction Begins in Omaha

…Myrtha has begun construction on the 2012 Olympic Trials pool in Omaha, which is expected to take 10 days to complete. The warmup pool in the adjacent exhibition halls is being started first, with the competition pool in the CenturyLink center slated to be kicked off on Friday. The course will be 50m x 25m, 2.5 meters in depth, and 10 lanes wide when set up in long course. The competition pool has already been sold to Charles River Aquatics in the Boston area after it completes its run of the Omaha Swimvitational, the Olympic Trials, and Masters Nationals…

…Alabama made the hiring of Jonty Skinner as an assistant coach official on Tuesday with this press release. This brings Dennis Pursley’s staff to four – himself, Skinner, James Barber, and diving coach Pat Greenwell, the latter of whom are being carried over from the previous staff. More hires are still expected for the staff…

…Brazil may have tipped their hands about what their plans are for the 400 free relay. In a recent release that breaks down many different metrics of this year’s Olympic Team, they included a chart (on the last page of this document) that highlighted each athlete’s entries. Cielo’s entry in the 4×100 free relay was highlighted in yellow, which says that it’s a “possible” entry. That would say that they intend to make him a finals-only swimmer, and the “maybe” depends on whether or not the other four swimmers can make the top 8. Meanwhile, according to Brett Hawke, the head coach of Auburn and Marcelo Chierighini, the relay swimmer split a 49.6 in a “lazy Sunday” swim back in Alabama, about three weeks after a taper. This swimming pool hall is owesome ! I wish i could have come to enjoy that amazing crowd and races . Looks even as fantastic as the Olympic venue
