MILFORD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Swimming and Diving team picked up a Northeast Conference over newcomer Merrimack this afternoon by a final score of 143-104. The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, January 18 when SHU hosts Siena at McCann Natatorium and honor the seven seniors on the team for senior day. The meet begins at 12:30 p.m.
Highlights
First years Kelly Bartnett and Ashley Ayala won their first college races. Bartnett took first in the 1000 Free with a time of 11:09.49 and Ayala touched the wall first in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:16.45. Both placed second in their other individual events as Bartnett took second in the 100 Free with a time of 56.37 and Ayala placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:19.42. Kelly Bartnett aided the first place winning 200 Free relay as she was the lead off going with a time of 26.75.
SHU also had double individual winners today as Emily Peter won the 100 Butterfly with a time of 59.96 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.31. Meanwhile Nicole Tingley took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.85 and took first in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.29. Tingley was also a member of the 200 Medley Relay which opened up the meet with a victory. Peter was the anchor of the A 200 Free Relay which came in second to the SHU 200 Free Relay of Bartnett, Shanna Haddow, Fiona Maxwell, and Lauren Somers.
Other notable wins on the day was a season best for sophomore diver Molly Martin on the 1 Meter board scoring a 220.45. She was followed up by teammates Megan Mclaughlin also a season best with a 212.05 and with a Jessica Pianese 142.40.
In the breaststrokes, senior Julia Pusateri won the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:11.35, Fiona Maxwell in the 200 Breaststroke 2:35.46. In the Freestyles Lauren Somers wone the 50 Free with a time of 25.02 while Margaret Flaherty took the 500 Free with a time of 5:29.31.

FAIRFIELD, CONN. – The Merrimack College women’s swimming team lost 143-104 to Sacred Heart University on Saturday afternoon in its first Northeast Conference (NEC) matchup of 2020. The loss was the first time that Merrimack College has competed solo against a NEC opponent.

- Senior captain Lucia Quesada Nylen took home first place for Merrimack in the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 2:04.36. Quesada Nylen also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.99
- Senior Andrea Taylor finished first in the 100-yard backstroke after posting a time of 1:03:21. She also finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 58.48.
- Freshman Jordan Clements swam in the 100-yard butterfly event and came in first place with a time of 1:03:15. Teammates Quesada Nylen and sophomore Madison Rawnsley finished second and third with times of 1:03:30 and 1:09:88.
- Merrimack also placed three times in the 200-yard individual medley event. Sophomore Alexa Tejeda posted a first-place time of 2:31:74. Sophomore Claudia Beasley came next with a time of 2:32:50, followed by junior Nicole O’Neill who finished in third with a time of 2:47:50.
- The relay team of Clements, Taylor, Rawnsley, and junior Erin Claflin finished first in the 200-yard freestyle after posting a time of 1:47.20.
