Reigning Georgia 1-5A 200 Free Champ John Mitchell Verbals to Kentucky

John Mitchell, who swims with Chamblee High School, has committed to the Kentucky Wildcats. Representing Chamblee, he won a Georgia 1-5A HS State Title in the 200 free (1:40.43) and placed 3rd in the 100 free (45.55). Mitchell swims club for the Metro Atlantic Aquatic Club.

“Between the academics and the very welcoming team and coaches I could tell the University of Kentucky would be a perfect fit for me. I can’t wait to be a Wildcat next fall!”

Mitchell’s Top Times (LCM in parentheses)

  • 50 free – 21.02 (23.96)
  • 100 free – 45.55 (53.38)
  • 200 free – 1:40.43
  • 50 fly – 22.74
  • 100 fly – 50.52 (57.91)

Mitchell is primarily a sprint freestyler, though he has shown some proficiency in sprint fly as well. He holds Winter Juniors cuts in the long course 50 free, as well as the short course 100 free.

In addition to his individual swims at the Georgia HS Champs, he anchored Chamblee’s 3rd place 200 free relay, splitting a 20.61, and split a 45.73 on their title-earning 400 free relay. He was the fastest split of his teammates on both relays.

Mitchell will contribute immediately as a freshman to the Wildcats’ sprint lineup. Last year, they had two guys under 21 and none under 20 in the individual 50 free, and he would’ve been their 4th fastest 100 freestyler.

Joining Mitchell in Kentucky’s class of 2020 are breaststroker Wyatt Amdor and versatile distance-oriented swimmer Glen Brown.

One of the diamonds in the rough in my opinion Skinny kid, great stroke with a crazy kick. Time progressions the last couple years have been out of this world. Kentucky might have gotten a steal with this one and Alex Taylor
