Olympians King and Page Highlight first night of Canada West University Championships

Canadian Olympians Alec Page and Savannah King highlighted the first evening of competition at the Canada West University Championships in Victoria, BC. coming away with wins in the distance freestyle events.

King of the UBC Thunderbirds kicked off the meet with a win in the 800 freestyle posting a time of 8:26.98, nearly 16 seconds ahead of the competition with Lindsay Delmar of the University of Calgary Dinos finishing second in a time of 8:42.68.

Page who represents the University of Victoria Vikes won the 1500 freestyle in a time of 15:04.48 followed by UVic teammate Eric Hedlin who finished with a time of 15:14.31.

After the first night of competition the University of Calgary leads the way with a point total of 193 thanks to the help of wins by Russell Wood in the 50 backstroke (24.84), Tianna Rissling in the 50 breaststroke (31.11), Jason Block in the 50 breaststroke (27.92) and their 800 freestyle relay team (7:19.42).

The Dinos are followed closely by the University of Victoria (172) and the University of British Columbia (170.5).

Other winners on the first night of competition include:

Women’s 50 butterfly – Kendra Chernoff – University of Alberta – 27.43

Men’s 50 butterfly – Coleman Allen – UBC – 24.35

Women’s 50 butterfly – Erin Stamp – UBC – 28.97

Women’s 800 freestyle relay – UBC – 7:57.60
