Northern Colorado Women Win 14 of 16 Events In Big Win Over Wyoming

GREELEY, Colo.—Nearly doubling up their neighbors to the north, the University of Northern Colorado swimming & diving team defeated the University of Wyoming 197-103 in the team’s second dual of the season.

Northern Colorado (2-0) won 14 of the 16 events, including 1-2 finishes in the 50 free, the 200 fly, and the 1-meter dive. The win was the second straight for UNC over the Cowboys and now hold a 2-3 record in the series since 2017.

Four Bears posted a pair of individual wins: Ali Jackson (50 free & 100 free), Anna Austin (500 free & 1,000 free), Payten Irwin (100 fly & 200 fly), and Maria Erokhina (100 breast & 200 breast). In addition, UNC swept the two relay events and the two diving events.

Nadine Coulie and Madison Berg went 1-2 in the 1-meter dive with Coulie scoring a season-best 260.93. Berg came back to win the 3-meter dive with a season-best 237.60.

In all, the Bears posted 20 different season-best marks on the day.

Northern Colorado will have a quick turnaround as it will host Utah Tech on Friday, Oct. 21. Action will get underway at 5 p.m. at the Butler Hancock Pool.

GREELEY, Colo. (10/20/22) – The University of Wyoming women’s swimming & diving team took to the road and battled Northern Colorado on Thursday inside Butler Hancock Swimming Pool. The Cowgirls fell to the Bears, 197-103.

The 200-yard backstroke highlighted the evening for Wyoming. The Cowgirls boasted the top-two finishers in the race.

Kayla Cunningham topped the field, clocking in at 2:06.53. Sydney Metzler wasn’t far behind after logging a time of 2:09.35.

Emily Giles rounded out the victorious Cowgirls. She won the 200-yard IM, registering a time of 2:13.21.

Giles also took second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.38. She was one of many Wyoming student-athletes that finished runner-up Thursday during individual events.

Kali Franckowiak in the 200-yard freestyle finished second with a time of 1:55.98. She also touched second in the 100-yard freestyle after swimming a time of 53.37.

Roxanna Ramirez took second in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles. She recorded a time of 5:16.08 in the 500 and a 10:44.66 in the 1,000.

Carly Palmer logged a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke after going 2:27.40. Emily Burchett finished second in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 58.41.

Sydney McKenzie went 1:05.33 in the 100-yard breaststroke to take runner-up. Alicia Gonzalez placed second in the 3-meter competition after logging a score of 229.35.

Wyoming is back in action Saturday at Colorado Mesa. Both the men’s and women’s teams battle the Mavericks at 1 p.m. inside El Pomar Natatorium.
