Northern Colorado Women Improve To 3-0 With Victory Over Utah Tech

GREELEY, Colo.—Victorious in nine of the 14 events, the Northern Colorado swimming & diving team continued its perfect start to its dual season with a 156-106 win over Utah Tech on Friday.

One day after posting a dominating win over Wyoming, the Bears upped their season record to 3-0 with a commanding win against the Trail Blazers.Saana Liikonen was a part of four meet wins on the night including leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 free with Ali Jackson and Sarah Jackson completing the successful trio. Liikoken and Ali Jackson returned with the top two results in the 100 free.

More UNC combo wins came from Payten Irwin in the 100 fly (58.01) and the 200 fly (2:07.44) and Maria Erokhina in the 100 breast (1:04.99) and the 200 breast (2:25.19).

Anna Austin captured the team’s other individual win with a season-best 1:54.87 in the 200 free. Close behind, Ali Jackson gave UNC another 1-2 finish with a season-best time of 1:56.95.

Touching the pad in 1:45.46, the Bears opened the dual with a closed out the dual with a season best in the 200 medley relay while it closed the competition with a 1-2 finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

UNC will hit the road next week with duals at the University of Idaho on Oct. 28 and at Washington State on Oct. 29.

Utah Tech collected five event wins in its season opening dual meet at WAC opponent Northern Colorado on Friday evening inside the UNC Butler-Hancock Pool.

Freshman Lily Magda, in her first collegiate meet, accounted for two of the Trailblazers’ five wins. Magda set the tone for the Blazers as she won the first individual race of the night, the 1,000-yard freestyle, with an 11-second victory in an altitude-adjusted time of 10:30.08, which is the third-fastest time in UT program history.

Magda then followed that up by winning the 500 free by nearly five seconds with an altitude-adjusted time of 5:10.40.

Utah Tech would sweep the top-three spots in the 100 back, led by junior Eleonore Rembert with an event-winning time of 57.33 (altitude adjusted; #6 all-time at UT) in her Blazer debut. Fellow junior Pia Murray touched the wall in second (57.45 – altitude adjusted; #7 all-time at UT), and sophomore Ally Boynton placed third (59.06 – altitude adjusted).

The trio repeated the feat in the 200 back, this time with Murray touching the wall first in a time of 2:04.13 (altitude adjusted; #5 all-time at UT). Rembert wound up second at 2:08.02 (altitude adjusted) and Boynton followed closely in third at 2:08.12 (altitude adjusted).

The Trailblazers final event win of the meet came in the 200 IM, where junior Ginevra Molino collected her first win as a Blazer with a time of 2:09.80 (altitude adjusted). In addition, sophomore Reese Hazan clocked the sixth-fastest time in the 200 fly in program history in her UT debut with a runner-up 2:09.66 (altitude-adjusted).

Utah Tech will head to southern California to compete against San Diego State in a dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 5.
