DENTON – The UNT swimming and diving team hosted its first home meet of the season on Saturday and dropped a close one, losing 157-142 to visiting New Mexico State despite several standout performances for the Mean Green.
UNT got double victories in the pool from juniors Shaena McCloud and Laura Mazzotta, while senior Saylor Hawkins doubled up with wins in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. Hawkins earned her NCAA Zone cut in the 3-meter springboard to finish a sweep of Zone cuts in all three diving events this season.
McCloud won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle in 23.83 and 52.89, respectively, and anchored the first-place team in the 200 medley relay, along with Diana Kolb, Tram Nguyen and Kailey Turner. Mazzotta won the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.
Today was a hard fought meet, and I’m really pleased with the effort from our team,” UNT head coach Brittany Roth said. “Paula Núñez Blázquez has been a great team player, filling in events where we need solid racing. Tram Nguyen was clutch today in the medley relay, and in the 100 butterfly. Laura Mazzotta had a big day today, she showed up for the team in a big way in her 100 and 200 breaststroke, holding her own in a strong field and taking the wins in season-best performances. Shaena McCloud came through big today. Her performance in the medley relay and in her two individual wins was outstanding, she’s been working on the details of her racing, and it’s showing. The team is gearing up to have a great performance at the House of Champions in Indianapolis in two weeks.”
IUPUI will host the midseason championships in Indianapolis from Nov. 15-19, to wrap up UNT’s fall schedule before the Mean Green take nearly two months off from competition before kicking off the winter season with a Jan. 6 home meet against New Mexico.
