New Hampshire Women Top Vermont In Season Opener

BURLINGTON, Vt — The University of New Hampshire swimming and diving team opened its season with a 173-126 victory at Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Forbush Natatorium.

The Wildcats took home first-place finishes in 11 of 16 events on the day against the Catamounts.

Freshman Emma Clarke (Avon, N.Y.) won the 1-meter dive with a score of 226.95 to start the ‘Cats off on the right foot, while sophomore Keira Moon (Middleton, Mass.) took home first in the three-meter dive with 218.55 points.

UNH was victorious in the 200-yard medley relay comprised of Megumi Komoto (Schaumburg, Ill.), Jamy Lum (Honolulu, Hawaii), Abby McKinney (Westfield, N.J.) and Olivia Stille (Stockholm, Sweden) with a mark of 1:47.78.

Senior Anna Metzler (Regensburg, Germany)  took home the top spot in the 200 free (1:52.37), 200 back (2:01.89) and 200 IM (2:04.45). Metzler broke the pool record in the 200 IM, which was previously held by UNH alum Jenni Roberts.

“We are pleased overall with our results today,” said UNH head coach Josh Willman. “The team had some solid performances as we get back into competition mode. Vermont is a talented team with a lot of depth and they pressed us hard early on today and it was great to see our women hang tough. Our divers are off to a great start and we are excited for the next two weekends ahead.”

Lum posted a time of 1:04.58 in the 100 breast and a time of 5:02.21 in the 500 free, which were the top times at the meet.

Senior Cate Wardinski (Burke, Va.) got the victory in the 50 free with a time of 24.57 in the victory for the Wildcats.

Freshman Maddie Fritz (Lansdale, Pa.) earned a win in the 200 breast (2:27.27) in her first collegiate meet for UNH.

The Wildcats return to action on Friday, October 29 against Central Connecticut State in the home opener. Meet time from Swasey Pool is 5 p.m.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Kira Parker won two individual events for the Catamounts and was a part of UVM’s winning 400 free relay team as UVM had a strong performance Saturday afternoon against defending America East Champion New Hampshire. Vermont won six events but fell 173.5-126.5 at Forbush Natatorium in their Spread Respect meet.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Saturday’s meet began at 11 a.m. with 1m diving. First year Sarah Campbell finished third overall with a score of 210.44. Her teammate and fellow first year Annika Overig placed fourth. Campbell placed second in the 3m diving with a score of 217.65
  • First year Ella Church won her second straight 1000 free as a collegian Saturday. She finished in a time of 10:31.57 in her second time ever competing in the distance. She was 12.08 seconds faster than her nearest competition.
  • Parker won the 100 back and the 100 free for the Catamounts. She won the 100 back with a time of 57.74 and the 100 free with a time of 53.67. It was her second straight meet with a win in the 100 back.
  • First year Madison Supple won her first career race in the 200 fly for the Catamounts. Her time of 2:11.13 was 1.65 seconds faster than her nearest competition.
  • Hally Laney also claimed a first career win for the Catamounts in the fly. She won the 100 in a time of 57.66.
  • For the second time this season UVM closed out the meet winning the 400 free relay, this time with a season-best time of 3:32.72. Parker, Jackie HouseMina Poppas and Charlie Ramey combined for the win.

WHO’S NEXT
Vermont returns to action in two weeks as they travel to Orono to face the Maine Black Bears in another America East dual meet. Action is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 6.
