Mississippi HS Record-Holder Blaise Vera Signs NLI to Swim at Pitt

“The coaches are phenomenal and were very easy to relate to and talk to. The team is one of a kind and I knew that the second I got on campus I knew that was where I wanted to be for the next four years. I believe that Pittsburgh will help me succeed academically and athletically. Go Panthers!”

Blaise Vera, a senior at Clinton High School in Clinton, Mississippi, has committed to swim for the University of Pittsburgh beginning next fall. Vera swims year-round with Mississippi Makos Swim Team and specializes in sprint free and fly. He holds the Mississippi state high school and Class 2 records in the 50 free (20.65) and 100 free (44.74), having lowered his own marks at the 2016 MHSAA Class 2 (5A-6A) Swimming Championships in October.

In club swimming Vera qualified for 2016 Olympic Trials and competed in the 50m free. He also swam the 50/100m sprint duo at Summer Juniors last August, finishing 9th and 20th, respectively. In December he placed 9th in the 50 and 7th in the 100 at Winter Juniors East.

Vera’s best times are:

  • 50 free: 20.25
  • 100 free: 44.05
  • 200 free: 1:40.36
  • 100 fly: 49.49

Vera will join fellow commits Blake Childress, John Fauteux, Noah Marble, Ryan Schonbachler in the Pitt class of 2021.
