Michigan State Finalist Sophia Moore Commits to Northern Michigan

Sophia Moore, a senior at Port Huron Northern High School in Michigan, is moving to the Upper Peninsula with a verbal commitment to Northern Michigan University.

“I am happy to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at Northern Michigan University. Go Wildcats!”

At the 2022 Michigan Girls Division 1 Championships, Moore finished 13th in the 100 fly. Moore also swims for the Great Lakes Tritons. At the 2023 Great Lakes Regional Meet – Northeast, Moore won the 100 back and 500 free.

• 100 breast: 1:07.44
• 200 breast: 2:25.97
• 100 fly: 59.41

NMU is a Division II school and a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. At the 2023 GLIAC women’s championships, NMU finished 3rd out of 5 teams. At that meet and with her best times, Moore would’ve made the B final in the 100 breast, 200 breast, and 100 fly.

Moore has the potential to be one of the top breaststrokers when she joins in the fall. In the 2022-23 season, Moore would’ve been the 4th-fastest 200 breaststroker and 5th-fastest 100 breaststroker on the team with her best times.

NMU has also been doing relatively well. In the past four seasons, the women have won the GLIAC title twice, after going without a title since 2002. And, given that some of the top breaststrokers on the team are young–including freshman Evie Decarlo and sophomore Zoe Dekievit–Moore will have the opportunity to train with a strong cohort as soon as she joins.

Moore also joins sprint freestyler Abby Keen and freestyler/butterflier Annika Geyer in the class of 2027.
