Arizona State Champion Tres Mungia Commits to University of Arizona

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Tres Mungia, Arizona high school state champion in the 200 IM and 100 breast, has committed to the University of Arizona for the class of 2027. This is a major win for the university, which has gone years since its convinced an in-state recruit of this caliber to go to Tucson.

Mungia is a senior at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix. He won the 200 IM and the 100 breast at the 2022 Arizona Boys Division 1 High School State Championship, and he also swam as part of the winning 200 medley relay, where his breaststroke clocked in at 24.79. His performance as a senior is a slight improvement from his performance as a junior, when he won the 100 breast but came 2nd in the 100 fly.

Mungia also competes for Swim Neptune. At 2022 Speedo Winter Juniors – West, Mungia finished 11th in the 200 breast with a time of 1:58.46, and 18th in the 100 breast with a time of 54.93. He has 2023 Summer Juniors cuts in the LCM 100 breast and 200 breast, and a 2022 Winter Juniors cut in the SCY 200 IM.

Best short-course yards times:

  • 50 free: 20.95
  • 100 breast: 53.84
  • 200 breast: 1:58.46
  • 100 fly: 49.32
  • 200 IM: 1:49.43

Arizona is a member of the Pac-12 conference. At the 2023 men’s Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships, Arizona finished 4th out of 6 teams. At that meet and with his best times, Mungia would’ve made the C finals in the 100 fly, 100 breast, and 200 breast.

Mungia is part of Arizona’s effort to add depth to its breaststroke group, which is further bolstered by the addition of Mitch Oliver in the class of 2026. Mungia’s best times would’ve made him the 4th-fastest 100 breaststroker on the team during the 2022-23 season, and 2nd-fastest 200 breaststroker. Many of Arizona’s top breaststrokers will be graduating within the next couple of years, like Ryan Foote, Jake Hand, and Brian Young; Mungia can help build the roster as soon as he joins.

In addition to Oliver, Mungia joins freestyler Aidan Flanagan, multi-stroker Briscoe Beaton, backstroker Will Meyers, and multi-stroker Sean Christianson in the class of 2027.
