Breaststroke Mitch Oliver Announces Commitment to University of Arizona for 2023

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Mitch Oliver from Littleton, Colorado has announced his commitment to head south to attend the University of Arizona in the fall of 2023.

Oliver made the announcement on his Instagram, writing, “Beyond honored to announce my commitment to further my academic and athletic career at the University of Arizona! Thankful to my coaches, teammates, friends and family for supporting me on this journey. Go wildcats!”

Oliver currently swims for the University of Denver Hilltoppers, where he is a US Open qualifier in the 200 breaststroke. He also holds the Junior Nationals cut in the 100 breaststroke in both short course and long course. At the recent Speedo Junior National Championships – West, Oliver competed in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 IM, posting season best times in all three events. His highest finish came in the 200 breaststroke, where he finished 28th overall in a time of 2:01.66.

Best Times SCY:

  • 100 Breaststroke – 55.54
  • 200 Breaststroke – 2:00.59
  • 200 IM – 1:53.90
  • 100 Butterfly – 50.54

With his times, Oliver will be a strong addition for the Arizona breaststroke group, which has lacked some depth this season, especially in the 200. In the 200 breaststroke, his best time would rank him 3rd on the roster this season, with the team already having completed half of their season. In addition, he would have ranked 4th on the team in the 100 breaststroke, putting himself in the position to possibly contribute to the 400 medley relay as well. Though he lacks a strong choice for a third event, Oliver could pursue the 100 butterfly or 200 IM, as both are events he’s seen progress in recently.

Oliver’s arrival will help fill some holes for Arizona in the coming years. Ryan Foote, the top 100 breaststroke on the roster, is a senior this season, meaning he will be graduating just before Oliver’s arrival. However, the two could overlap a season if Foote elects to take his additional year of eligibility provided due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Likewise, Jake Hand and Brian Young, the other top breaststrokers on the roster are both juniors, meaning the team will need some underclassmen to step-up in the next few years.

With his commitment, Oliver is set to join Sean Christianson, Will Meyers, Briscoe Beaton, Aidan Flanagan, and Tres Mungia in Arizona’s class of 2027.
