2014 Arena Grand Prix at Santa Clara
Men’s 400 IM – FINALS
Sebastian Rosseau took out a strong first 100, touching the wall at 57 for his butterfly. Chase Kalisz sat right on his hip through the butterfly and stayed there through most of the backstroke leg. In the last 15 meters of the backstroke legs, Kalisz snuck ahead of Rosseau leading into his strongest stroke; breaststroke. Kalisz pulled ahead, giving himself a 5 body length lead into the freestyle. He touched the wall for the win with a time of 4:11.71. That time will stand as the fifth fastest time in the TYR world rankings.
Kalisz will be 4:05 either this or next year. world record in Rio isn’t out of reach.
can someone explain his comment about the taper for him and Anthony Ervin??
something about 6K and 1500…
oh wait…is it just that even when he is tapering…he’s still swimming 6,000m…
Is that normal for 400IM swimmers?
Well from what I got from the video, he’s probably saying that when Anthony is in tapper and swimming about 1500, that he is still swimming 6000 at that point in time. Anthony probably starts his tapper much sooner than Kalisz. And he probably still keeps the yardage up fairly high, but most likely nothing as intense the last week and a half that he’s used to doing. He needs to keep a certain level of base up in order to do 400 IM (along with any other events he’s doing at his final meet).
World record? I don’t know but it will require at least 4.06 to win the gold medal in 2016.
And if Chase Kalisz can improve his backstroke as well as he did for his butterfly in the last 12 months, he will play the gold with the Japanese swimmers.
It must be fantastic for him to have MP as mentor.
Him breaking the world record is not as crazy as it sounds. This summer I think we will definitely see a 4:07 or faster from him and if he improves as much next year as he did this year (2013 ncaa: 3:38, 2014 ncaa: 3:34) we could definitely be seeing an awesome world record swim from him in 2016.
