World Aquatics released this week the swimming entries for the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
Some swimmers face a busy schedule. No one will swim more individual events than Belgium’s Roos Vanotterdijk, entered in seven races: women’s 50 and 100 free, 50 and 100 back, 50 and 100 fly, and 200 IM.
Entered in five events, Israel’s Anastasia Gorbenko matches her busy schedules from the 2023 and 2024 Worlds. Algeria’s Jaouad Syoud, entered in the 50 and 200 breast, 200 fly, and 200 and 400 IM, also had many entries at the 2023 Worlds – six.
Other five-event entries include Olympic champions Thomas Ceccon (Italy) and Hubert Kos (Hungary), plus Austria’s Iris Julia Berger.
But no one stands out more than Canada’s Summer McIntosh, who is entered in five individual events: the women’s 400 and 800 free, 200 fly, and 200 and 400 IM.
With this lineup, she’s targeting a rare achievement: winning medals in five individual events at a single World Championships. Among all participants in Singapore, she is the sole swimmer with a realistic chance to do so.

So far, only two swimmers have done it:
- Michael Phelps at the 2007 championships in Melbourne, winning the men’s 200 free, 100 and 200 fly, 200 and 400 IM, plus two relays — breaking four individual world records and one relay WR.
- Sarah Sjostrom at the 2019 championships in Gwangju, winning gold in the women’s 50 fly, silver in 50 free and 100 fly, and bronzes in the 100 and 200 free.
McIntosh has a real shot at five medals. She set world records in the 400 free, 200 and 400 IM this year, and is the second‑fastest ever in the 800 free and 200 fly. She could even equal Phelps’ five golds from 2007.
Among those who could have won five medals in a single edition, the swimmer who came closest was Shirley Babashoff in 1975. In Cali, she claimed: gold in 200 and 400 free, silver in 100 free, bronze in 800 free and 4th in 200 IM.
Besides Phelps, Sjostrom and Babashoff, some other swimmers reached five individual finals in one edition — Martina Moravcova (1998), Laure Manaudou (2007), Mireia Belmonte (2013), and Katinka Hosszu (2017).
But only one swimmer has managed to reach six individual finals in a single edition: Japan’s Kosuke Hagino in 2013. He contested the 200 and 400 freestyle, 100 and 200 backstroke, and 200 and 400 individual medley. However, the heavy schedule proved too taxing, and he fell well short of six, five and even four medals — ultimately reaching the podium only twice, earning silver in the 200 free and 200 IM.
McIntosh will aim for five individual golds. Even four would be remarkable — besides Phelps, only Ryan Lochte (2011), Katie Ledecky (2015), and Caeleb Dressel (2019) have achieved that in a World Championships.
Others, like Leon Marchand — entered in the same four events he won at the 2024 Olympics (200 breast, 200 fly, 200 and 400 IM) — also have a shot at four gold medals in Singapore.
But five medals is a solitary mission for Summer McIntosh. She’s poised to continue making history.

Ledecky is going to go out guns blazing in the 800 to try and break McIntosh, just like she did to Titmus last year. There’s a good chance it will work, given that the 800 is a step up in distance for McIntosh and a step down for Ledecky. However, if Summer can hang on til 600 or 700, her chances of winning go way up based on her closing speed we saw in the 400 at trials.
In the Ontario swimming Trials on now there are two sisters from Toronto both won Gold. One is Julia who is the other
based on the past when she fudged the 400 free, she will go out hard in the 800 free and mentally lose to KL. I would love for her to win it but she doesn’t have the nerves the beat KL. She will sure beat the WR but not Ledecky in a lane next to her. But hey, 4G1S is pretty spectacular.
Easy feat for her.
But no one stands out more than Canada’s Summer McIntosh, who is entered in five individual events: the women’s 400 and 800 free, 200 fly, and 200 and 400 IM.

I got tired from just reading her schedule and she’s gonna medal in all those events.
Smashing Summer!
Something will have to go really wrong for her to not win five individual medals.
If all goes according to plan Summer will have five golds. If it doesn’t go according to plan she will end up with four golds and a silver. 😊🇨🇦
Rank the gold medals from most likely to least likely, in your opinion.
400 IM gold
400 free/200 IM/200 fly (tie) all gold
800 free this is where the fireworks spark. Can’t predict gold or silver but it will be (hopefully) the race of the century and a very close one.
if no ties allowed, I’m going:
400 IM
200 fly
200 IM
400 free
800 free
First and last are obvious. The 400 free has been by far the shakiest event for her out of the other 3 historically and Ledecky was in impeccable form earlier this year. The current top 200 IMers are closer to her than the 200 flyers are, both by season bests and overall lifetime bests
Yeah in fact I think this is probably the only right opinion on this one.
From most likely to least likely:
400IM (Obviously), 200IM (The competition is slimmer than last year), 200 Fly (Could swap with 200IM their even as almost a for sure), 400 Free (She still hasn’t won this one yet, which is very surprising), 800 Free (can she take out the freestyle GOAT?).
I think she does it and gets 5 golds, breaks the 200m fly record, not the 800 free record. Starts this quad to the olympics with a resounding slam that she’s not going anywhere. Summer’s world, we’re just living it.
400 Free (She still hasn’t won this one yet, which is very surprising),

It’s not that surprising.
In 2022 she was still 15 yo, and although Titmus didn’t swim, she was against Ledecky who swam 3:58. Summer swam PB of 3:59
In 2023 as newly WR holder, she has jitters and couldn’t manage the pressure well. Also, Titmus crushed WR so even if Summer swam her WR pace, she’d have gotten beaten anyway.
This year is her year.
2024?
Ariarne has Summer’s number so far.
Hopefully she’ll return soon from her sabbatical so we can continue to see her, Summer and Katie battle it out. I suspect they’ll continue to push each other over the next three years as we get closer to LA 2028.
She lost the the current world record holder and defending Olympic champion and defending 2023 World Champion, how is that surprising?
Is not like Summer has ever beaten Titmus (she hasn’t)
400 IM
200 fly
200 IM
400 free
800 free
400 IM
200 fly
400 free
200 IM
800 free
By the time we get to the 800 free we should have a pretty good idea of how McIntosh and Ledecky’s form are as both would have raced multiple times including head to head in the 400 free on day one.
You really can’t ask for a better scenario as a swim fan than to have the goat KL up against the young phenom SM in what hopefully will be a classic 800 free final. I would not be surprised at all if the final 50 will be an all out sprint to decide the winner.
I think that we will know on day 1 if she wins 5 gold. If she wins the 400fr in a WR or near WR; she wins all five. 800 included.
I actually suspect the 400s and 800 are easier than doing 3 rounds of 100/200s? Especially when she can coast.
Also, I’m sure Weinstein is making the right choice, but it would have been unprecedented to see her go for 200 – OW.
