Wahoo Aquatics Club’s Gil Shaw has joined UNC Wilmington’s class of 2026 verbal commitments

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at UNC Wilmington! Thank you to my family, coaches, the Wahoo founders and everyone who has helped me get to this point! GO SEAHAWKS #hawkyeah #committedSW

The South Carolina native’s lifetime best 100 breast time would have placed 5th in the A-final at the 2021 CAA Championships and would rank #9-best among UNC Wilmington swimmers of all-time. Her best 200 breast time would rank #8 in program history.

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 breast – 1:04.09
  • 200 breast – 2:18.80
  • 50 free – 24.55
  • 100 fly – 58.15
  • 200 IM – 2:10.43

Competing for Wando High School, Shaw won the 100 breast by half a second with a best time of 1:04.49 at the 2020 South Carolina High School 5A State Championships.

In February, Shaw went from having never broken the 2:20 barrier in the 200 yard breast straight to a 2:18.80, dropping nearly 3 seconds from her lifetime best. Her 100 breast time is from the same senior state championship meet in February.

In July, Shaw continued her personal best rampage by winning the 100 breast at the South Carolina long course state meet with a winter junior nationals time of 1:13.62, crushing her previous best from June by .90.

Junior Sarah Olson currently leads the Seahawks’ breaststroke squad. She finished 6th in the 100 breast at the 2021 CAA Championships with a time of 1:04.43 and helped the 200 medley relay to a silver medal. At the same meet, sophomore Hannah Owings was a pivotal part of the breaststroke group, competing in the consolation finals of the 100 and 200 breast.

UNCW women finished 5th out of 6 teams at the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Championships under head coach Bobby Guntoro who joined the staff last season. He came to the Seahawks with a big reputation from coaching 8 seasons at NC State and we’re already seeing his level of experience pay off with recruiting.

Shaw joins Cassidy Lima, Quinn Bike, Lauren Sharp, and Maura Schoppa as members of the Seahawks incoming class of 2026.
