General Statement

This position performs a variety of professional aquatic duties including safeguarding the activities of the patrons of the Avon Recreation Center and assisting the Aquatics Supervisor with managing the aquatics division

Responsible for the direct supervision of part-time and seasonal aquatics staff

Work Environment

Work is performed inside the pool area and at off-site locations during various hours including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.  Due to the nature of aquatics and rescue activities, the full range of physical movements are required in this position, including swimming, walking, running, jumping, lifting, and climbing. Up to 30% of work may include administrative tasks which may include sitting for extended periods of time.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains a strong on deck presence and enforces pool rules and regulations to prevent drowning, injuries or accidents
  • Monitors pool area for patrons in potential danger or those in danger and responds to emergencies with professionalism
  • Interprets and enforces the aquatic’s program policies and procedures in a positive and courteous manner
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents and uses all required safety equipment
  • Follows and implements emergency procedures, uses all required safety equipment and responds to emergencies when appropriate
  • Identifies and recommends improvements in division to ensure functions are efficient and cost effective.
  • Ensures customers have been processed by the Front Desk, with a stamp or some other indication of having checked in
  • Inspects facilities for cleanliness and assist in proper maintenance and sanitary operation of the pool, pool area and locker rooms
  • Monitors and maintains pool filtration system and water chemistry through testing of water samples and adjust chemistry as needed to maintain standards
  • Assists with pool maintenance including but not limited to, backwashing, draining the Jacuzzi, cleaning strainer baskets, cleaning chlorinators, and filling acid barrels.
  • Assists with promotional strategies and advertising for all activities
  • Maintains and stores equipment properly
  • Assists with the purchase, replacement and maintenance of equipment used in aquatic programs and operations
  • Assists with scheduling, hiring, training and mentoring part-time staff
  • Assists with creating the Aquatics schedule and confirming group reservations
  • Completes necessary paperwork including attendance and chemical logs, incident reports, and other paperwork as necessary
  • Conducts lifeguard skills audits on a bi-weekly basis

Other Duties and Functions

  • Works closely with the Recreation Supervisors to ensure quality communication between Aquatics and other divisions
  • Assists with opening and closing procedures
  • Attends and contributes at in-service training sessions and meetings
  • Seeks out and obtains community input on new programs, measuring level of interest and answers questions and concerns of patrons
  • Scheduled for weekly “on-call” hours as needed
  • Work as a Guest Service Representative, Swim Instructor/Coach, and assist in managing other Aquatics programs on an as needed basis
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and rules and regulations of aquatic recreational program planning and development
  • Knowledge of safety requirements, lifeguarding techniques related to rescue of drowning swimmers and first aid procedures common in swimming pool operations
  • Knowledge of equipment and facilities used in a recreation program
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and requirements
  • Knowledge of local community resources
  • Knowledge of water chemistry and pool mechanics
  • Ability to pass monthly aquatics proficiency tests
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies making proper judgments as to the correct course of action
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; work well with varied and demanding people; communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing
  • Ability to organize tasks and working environment to maximize efficiency
  • Ability to interact effectively with others and present a positive image to the public

Education And Experience

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in recreation, physical education, or related field preferred.  Current Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications and a minimum of two (2) years of lifeguard experience required.  Water Safety Instructor certification, competitive swim coaching experience, and previous supervisory experience preferred. Ability to obtain Administering Emergency Oxygen certification within 3 months of hire, Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) certification within 6 months of hire, Waterfront Lifeguarding within 1 year of hire, and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) within 1 year of hire.

Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment swimming test, a drug and alcohol test and may be subject to random, unannounced drug and alcohol testing as outline in the Town’s Drug & Alcohol Policy.
