Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Lead our developmental age group swimmers, focusing on growth of the program and development of swimmers.

  • Average hours coaching on deck will start at 7.5-10 hours per week depending on our schedule with the pool.

SUMMARY:

The Age Group Swim Coach is responsible for the developmental training and coaching swimmers to their fullest potential, communication between the coaching team and the board, along with timely communication with parents. RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Provide positive leadership, instruction, and execution of strategy for all levels of swimmers through implementation of a consistent coaching program throughout the entire Chinook program.  The program will have emphasis on endurance, stroke technique, and competitive success.
  • Develop and conduct Age Group practices in accordance with the Head Coach’s and Chinook’s developmental training strategy.
  • Assist with the administration and participation at on-site/off-site swim meets along with other swim team functions throughout the year as needed.

Under the direction of the Head Coach, the purpose of this position is to use athletics as a tool to educate college students. By using intercollegiate competition and all activities related to such competition, this position serves as a teacher and mentor to help build student character, prepare students for a constructive and effective life, and teach valuable life lessons including work ethic; discipline; resilience; persistence; teamwork and selflessness; goal-setting and goal achievement; overcoming adversity; and leadership. This position typically influences student-athletes for their entire four years at Harvard and plays a key role in shaping their personal development.

This position assists in planning, directing and coaching the men’s intercollegiate swimming program. Typically works with all student-athletes in the program.

This position typically requires experience coaching at the collegiate level or comparable experience.  Comparable experience may include coaching/teaching at the professional level. Particularly for sports that are more prominent on an international level than in the United States, comparable experience may include playing in a professional or other high-performance environment, such as for a national team or at the Olympic level.

This position will work 10 hours per week during the in-season, championship segments of the men’s swimming varsity sport season. This includes the months of October-March.

Athlete Team Management

  • Assists in developing student-athlete skills, helping to plan and execute practices, supporting in-game management, and coordinating a portion of team programming of particular importance. Helps team perform at competitive levels.
  • Typically has some impact on developing the skills for a portion of student-athletes.
  • Requires the ability to effectively communicate with students by generating enthusiasm through credible coaching.
  • Assists in analyzing video for scouting opponents and team development.
  • Assists in on-campus recruiting and retaining talent consistent with values of excellence and inclusion; assists in developing team enthusiasm for recruitment and retention.
    • Please note this position is not eligible to recruit off-campus.
  • Supports culture of education through athletics. Assists in academic integration with team, as appropriate.

Operational Complexity

  • Typically assists in the execution of strategy, logistics and operational direction of the team, with greater supervision.
  • Participates in professional activities, as appropriate. With instruction, follows trends and embraces innovation opportunities.
  • Problems faced may be moderately complex.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively with the coaching staff and athletics administrators.

Sport-specific essential functions:

  • Ability and interest to work with all training groups during workouts.
  • Ability to think critically about stroke biomechanics and how it relates to each individual.
  • Ability to critique or interest in learning dryland and weight training movement patterns, progressions, and techniques.
  • Researching broad spectrum of topics related to kinesiology, psychology and nutrition assigned by coaching staff to help further impact team performance.
  • This position will have expected attendance at practices, but not competitions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Requires at least 1 year of coaching, professional or Olympic experience

Additional Qualifications:

  • Requires substantial sport-specific knowledge and knowledge of relevant issues
  • Understands the philosophy, principles and policies of Harvard and Ivy League athletics (including the University Conflict of Interest and Commitment policy)

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Valid driver’s license needed.
  • CPR and First Aid required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift equipment associated with the sport.

Working Conditions:

  • Some evening and weekend work required.

The Waunakee WAVE is a year-round competitive swim program located in Waunakee, WI a short drive to Madison, WI. We are currently looking for several energetic, technique oriented and experienced assistant coaches. These positions range from assisting a lead coach or being a lead coach for one of our groups. This position does have the opportunity to grow into a position with more hours and responsibility within the club. A FULL-TIME position may be made available for the correct applicant.  As a staff, we do not believe in measuring success in the short term, but rather by teaching an appreciation of the process.

As a Swim Coach, you will play a crucial role in training and developing swimmers of all ages and skill levels. If you have a deep understanding of swimming techniques, a track record of coaching success, and a genuine love for the sport, we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities:

Develop and implement training programs with guidance from the Head Coach and/or Lead Coach (as applicable) tailored to the needs and abilities of individual swimmers. Conduct swim practices and provide guidance and feedback to improve technique and performance. Evaluate and monitor swimmers’ progress and provide constructive feedback for improvement. Be available for competitive swim meets one to two per month, ensuring the team’s participation and success. Collaborate with other coaches to establish training strategies and team goals. Foster a safe and positive training environment, promoting sportsmanship and teamwork. Lead Coaches will communicate regularly with swimmers and their parents regarding training schedules, progress, and upcoming events. Stay updated with the latest coaching techniques and industry trends to continually enhance coaching skills and knowledge.

Qualifications:

Previous experience swim coaching experience and/or competing on a competitive year-round swim club is a plus. Strong knowledge of swimming techniques, training principles, and competitive swimming rules and regulations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively connect with swimmers of different ages and backgrounds. Ability to provide constructive feedback and motivate swimmers to achieve their goals. Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team of coaches. Passion for swimming and a commitment to the development and success of swimmers.  All applicants must have or be willing to obtain the following:

  • Candidates must have or be willing to obtain all USA Swimming Certifications including a Background Check, Athlete Protection Training, CPR/First Aid, Safety training and willing to get their Lifeguard Certification within 3 months of hiring.
  • Assists the Head Coach and/or Head Age Group Coach in all areas as/where needed, when necessary.
  • If the candidate is the lead coach of a group, they will act as primary contact to parents regarding any issues or concerns with any swimmer in their group while including the Head Coach in these issues.

Summary

The Assistant Coach, Swimming is responsible for supporting the Head Coach by coaching Cadet-Athletes, recruiting highly qualified potential Cadet-Athletes, overseeing team travel, monitoring the academic progress and overall well-being of Cadet-Athletes in their primary group, and inspire cadet leaders of character through an extraordinary Division 1 athletic experience. This is a professional coaching position, and all duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of the United States Military Academy (“USMA”), Army West Point Athletics Association Inc. (“AWPAA”) and the NCAA.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
