Open Water Coach – West Hollywood Aquatics

West Hollywood Aquatics is currently seeking a coach to lead a new open water training and competition program being established by the club. Candidates should be experienced and motivated coaches who are knowledgeable of open water training and competition for both triathlons and distance swim races.  We are looking for individuals who create great workouts, inspire high morale, encourage recruitment of new members, build team cohesiveness, communicate effectively and provide positive reinforcement for experienced as well as novice open water swimmers.

Job description & responsibilities

  • Starting in early July 2019, coach a weekly ocean workout for a period of 10 weeks, with the potential of adding 6 more weeks, if there is a high attendance & interest level
  • Instruct members on the specifics of swimming and racing in open water with an emphasis on safety and understanding variable conditions
  • Focus and train group for participation in one local open water competition
  • Foster a welcoming environment for new swimmers with the goal of retaining swimmers who try open water swimming for the first time
  • Additional opportunity to coach West Hollywood Aquatics pool workouts
  • Develop and support an active, athletic and entertaining atmosphere
  • Understand and encourage the WH2O founding mission of openness, inclusion and promotion of aquatic sports & competition

Previous experience & skills

  • Prior experience coaching an open water or triathlon program
  • Strong emphasis on safety and understanding of dynamic ocean conditions
  • Competitive swimming experience and knowledge of stroke mechanics and race strategy
  • Demonstrated experience coaching both competitive and recreational swimmers
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor, provide leadership, and exhibit a positive, team-building attitude
  • Physical demands including the ability to instruct and observe participants (out of and in the water), lift and move light equipment
  • Technical abilities of basic email, web applications, microsoft word, excel, powerpoint
  • Organization and planning abilities (travel planning, scheduling, correspondence)
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Preferred USMS Certified Coach or USAS Coaching Member or USAT Certified Coach or WOWSA Certified Coach, Adult CPR/First Aid

Compensation & reporting

  • Competitive compensation to be on an hourly basis (or stipend based compensation) for coaching as well as time spent on administrative and planning tasks.
  • Travel expenses and per-diem, annual National Governing Body coaching membership, conferences and development workshops as approved by the board of directors
  • Open water coach reports to the head swimming coach
  • Continual performance feedback and compensation review annually with board of directors
