Job Description:

This position provides leadership for the intercollegiate competitive swim team for men and women, at University of Saint Joseph. In charge of all phases of the Swim Program including: recruiting, retention and technical and tactical development of the team, in season conditioning programs and training, supervising assistant coaches and managers. The position calls for the person to generate enthusiasm for swimming and to teach a team approach to students consistent with institutional values.

Develop, implement and evaluate procedures for the total operation of the aquatic facility according to university policy. This position is responsible for the overall management of the day to day operation of the college pool and its staff, which serves the internal campus community and outside members. Oversee all procedures and risk management necessary to maintain a safe swimming pool environment in compliance with federal, state and local laws.

RESPONSIBILITIES – Head Men’s and Women’s Swim Coach (include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for all recruiting activity including outreach, attendance at various swim meets and events, maintaining records and coordinating with admissions office.
  • Establish and monitor student athlete retention protocols including evaluating grades, schedules and academic programs of all swim team members.
  • Oversee and develop effective practice regiments and activity including on-deck coaching during all morning afternoon and weekend practice sessions; develop creative, technical training programs to support short and long term performance strategy, coordinate with strength coach.
  • Direct and oversee home competition management including timing system set-up and breakdown, schedule and secure meet officials and process payment, set-up of all meet operational and logistical requirements, update all HYTEK software and report results.
  • Accountable for preparing and scheduling all away meet requirements including equipment, transportation, meals, communications and post-meet reporting.
  • Supervise assistant coach and diving coach
  • Maintain budgets and fundraising for the swim team.
  • Ensures compliance with all College, NCAA Division III and GNAC policies
  • Works with autonomy in regarding to team rules and discipline, recruiting, managing budgets, fundraising activity

RESPONSIBILITIES -Aquatics Director (include but are not limited to):

  • Assist with developing, implementing and monitoring annual operational budget, equipment replacement, short and long term maintenance projects and revenue streams for the pool.
  • Responsible for management of the pool area; safety of equipment, scheduling of lifeguards, maintaining pool chemicals, scheduling and event programming, and pool equipment. Work directly with Custom Aquatics on monthly maintenance.
  • Manage all outside pool rentals.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate the pool staff.
  • Oversee the training, certification and supervision of lifeguards assigned to the swimming pool.
  • Develop procedures that will support effective personnel management and schedule staff coverage for all hours of aquatic center operation (regular schedules, special events, vacations and emergency coverage).
  • Submit work orders to Facilities Services for maintaining mechanical systems, diving boards and pool finishes.
  • Advise on pool recreation programming for students, staff and faculty
  • Directs Blue and Gold  Swim School for Swimming Lessons



Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree Preferred
  • 5 years experience in coaching on the high school or College level. College preferred
  • 3 years experience in operating managing a pool facility
  • Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Skilled in HYTEK Team and Meet Manager Software

Other Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
  • Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed (e.g., mail merge, data base management). Familiarity with specific applications used by the University/Department a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner
  • Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, negotiation and sales skills, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision
  • Professional, courteous demeanor and appearance; ability to engage positively and work professionally with students, faculty, staff and administration and represent the University professionally to the public

Additional Information:

This is a 12-month position. The anticipated salary for this position is $63,000 to $68,000. The final offer will be based on the successful candidate’s qualification and experience.
