The right person for the job:
We are looking for a very responsible person: show up, be on time, work hard, do what you say you are going to do, do a good job today and a better one tomorrow.
We are looking for a great teacher: love working with kids and be good at it; know how to take a complicated idea and break it into simple parts.
We are looking for a passionate learner: love swimming, and want to learn everything you can about swimming and coaching. Educational opportunities abound.
We are looking for a technique-freak: love to watch and help create beautiful and efficient (and fast!) swimming.
We are looking for a long-term thinker: appreciate that we are aiming at building a GREAT developmental program, which is a marathon and not a sprint.
Swim Torrance is seeking a Head Coach to lead a high-quality, athlete-centered program that balances on-deck technical instruction with administrative leadership. The ideal candidate will help sustain a safe, supportive and high-performing team culture rooted in our TORCH values: Teamwork, Ownership, Respect, Commitment and Hard Work.
Coaching Philosophy
The Head Coach should be committed to Long-Term Athlete Development with a qualitative coaching approach that prioritizes developing anaerobic capabilities in a high quality, high intensity, race pace or faster environment. The ideal candidate will have coached top-end athletes to Sectionals, Junior Nationals, Zones, Select Camps and or NCAA’s and be adept at developing swimmers in all IMR/IMX events.
Athlete Development and Program Leadership
The Head Coach, in partnership with the Coaching staff, will design and implement age and skill-appropriate practices, seasonal plans, dryland training and progression pathways for all training groups. Responsibilities include ongoing technique development and efficiency over sheer yardage.
The Head Coach will develop the whole person by builiding growth mindsets and coaching athletes as individuals, including their psychological and motivational needs, while also providing individualized goal setting, progress monitoring and consistent feedback.
The Head Coach will grow and support the importance of a strong, vibrant lesson program as the foundation for the team’s future talent. They will plan the meet season, work with Lead Coaches to select events, submit entries, build lineups and attend competitions to support athletes throughout the full competitive calendar.
Staff Leadership and Administration
The Head Coach will recruit, mentor, train and evaluate Lead and Assistant Coaches to ensure consistent standards and a cohesive team culture. This role includes clear communication with Coaches, Athletes, Parents, Board members, LSC partners and pool/facility management.
The Head Coach must be proficient with swim team software and administrative tools including SportsEngine/Team Unify, Meet Manager, USA Swimming OME and related platforms. The Head Coach will work closely with the Operations Specialist, Coaches, and the Board to support daily team operations, athlete development and program growth.
Safety and Compliance
The Head Coach must maintain up-to-date certifications and ensure that all programming and Coaching staff remain in compliance with USA Swimming, Safe Sport and applicable LSC requirements. Required or expected certifications include USA Swimming Safe Sport, CPR/AED, First Aid and any additional LSC and California state law-specific requirements.
Qualifications and Expectations
Swim Torrance is seeking a candidate with 4-7 years of Senior Lead, College or Head Coach experience with demonstrated leadership in a competitive swim program. The ideal candidate will have had a collegiate swimming experience to provide knowledgeable pathways for young athletes to explore opportunities.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means developing swimmers who improve technically, compete confidently, and grow as people. It also means building a strong supportive Coaching staff, maintaining excellent communication, supporting the team’s culture and helping Swim Torrance continue its tradition of excellence at the regional, national and international level.
